Lee football carousel still rolling
Word is that Palko has been fired. This has been rumored anyway with new school board regime taking over. Maybe this group will surprise and happen on a good hire and actually give them a chance to establish something.....but I'm doubting it greatly.

Sorry, yeah, my typing was just a bit off, haha.

Re: Lee football carousel still rolling
Palko called a meeting with the football players this morning and told them that he had been fired.
-
Re: Lee football carousel still rolling
How long did he last? Maybe that will make way for Austin or Salyers to take over the reigns. I wouldn't touch that job for all the money in the world. It is much too political.
-
Re: Lee football carousel still rolling
Palko lasted 2 years. Coomer, previous coach, lasted one year.
-
Re: Lee football carousel still rolling
As hard a time Lee has with keeping a coach they may as well scrap their football program all together.
-
Re: Lee football carousel still rolling
If they are expecting someone to come in there and get 7-8 wins right off the bat they are crazy. I would assume that somebody on the new board wants Satterfield to be the coach now?
-
Re: Lee football carousel still rolling
Where the hell is palko from anyways?
-
Re: Lee football carousel still rolling
I think he coached in Maryland before he came to Lee. It seems that I remember that he had some ties to the area somehow.
-
Re: Lee football carousel still rolling
He coached at Chopitcon High School in Maryland for quite a while. I think right before he came to Lee he was teaching nearby in Church Hill.

That would fit the trend for Lee if you've noticed. Lee seems to rotate, in-house one go and then go outside of the county the next...then back again. If they stick to it the next hire would be already in the system. The way Lee goes through coaches it would seem to me awfully tough to really get a good pool of candidates. Some seem high on this new SB and while I like a couple of them, we've heard this before and not seen much difference. I guess we'll see. Like you say, I really don't know how they expect much anything different. I'm saving the topics on the CMD forum for future reference. I hope they surprise in a big way, but given past history...eh, its hard to believe it.
-
Re: Lee football carousel still rolling
If I were Lee, I would pick the phone up, call Phil Robbins and say "what would it take for you to be our coach"? If they would leave him alone he would be competing for CMD titles in 2-3 years.

Re: Lee football carousel still rolling
Lee has a pretty good group of freshman and soon to be rising freshman from Pennington coming up the pipeline. Of course, we have seen that a few times in the last decade, and not see much done with it at the varsity level. Should make for an interesting spring/summer in Lee County.
-
Re: Lee football carousel still rolling
There is no way a school with 700-800 kids should not field a football team of at least 80 kids. If they can get someone in there that could drum up the interest in the program to where people actually want to come out for the team they would be very competitive. Heck they were very competitive this year they just lost a ton of close games. They just need numbers and for an extended period of time. If this kids aren't committed and the best they can get out is 40 kids, something is wrong. I know travel is a big basis but the County needs to do everything possible to make it a successful program or fold it all together. All in or All out.

Re: Lee football carousel still rolling
Agreed greatly. Of course it helps to actually give them a chance to try and establish something toward it. Lee has a good number also that go to Union, TW, RC or wherever (even those that move away, look how many formerly of Lee are at Gate City)....maybe with some continuity and even just a little more success some of these kids go to or stay at Lee.

Are you saying that kids that live OUTSIDE of Wise County are attending Wise County Schools and they don't live in Russell County? Unheard of!

Re: Lee football carousel still rolling
Lee does not have a good number of students that go the TW. There maybe only 5 or 6 students attend TW from the Jonesville area. Most of those are girls. No Football players from Lee go the TW.
-
Re: Lee football carousel still rolling
Lee is the same size that Pennington High was when it shut down. It's not some big huge school anymore. People are expecting too much.
-
Re: Lee football carousel still rolling
I didn't think Pennington was that big when it was open. I thought they were around 500 or so.
-
Re: Lee football carousel still rolling
Pretty certain of that too stripes. I'd say helper knows more so bit was thinking they were somewhere around 500 some. Lee still ranges in 700-800 now.

I was grouping them all together with the other schools.

If they did put Satterfield in as HC, half of the kids they have now will quit. Some have said that they will not be back if he is still left as an assistant.
-
Re: Lee football carousel still rolling
Wow, maybe you should tell the kids at lee that he's not going to be at lee next year anyway. That guy lucked up and is getting out before he falls into the graveyard. Go sat
-
Re: Lee football carousel still rolling
Can't fall much more into something you've been a part of for quite a while.
-
Re: Lee football carousel still rolling
Don't think you understand, heard from a good source he's going to another county. You're right though, he's seen little success as an assistant in football. Seems to do well in wrestling though.
-
Re: Lee football carousel still rolling
Honestly though, how many years has Sat been an assistant even. After coming back to Lee he helped someone a couple of years. Stepped away for a couple of coaches I guess, and then came back with Palko.
-
Re: Lee football carousel still rolling
The comment about Phill Robbins is IMO the best idea I have heard. Love or hate him, Phil is a good coach (Barry Jones made him a winning coach) and can handle the politics side of things. He wont win any state championships at Lee but Phill would get them on a winning path and establish some tradition and pride there. Phill has proven that without Barry Jones with him the state championship is out of his grasp, but he is a winning coach and would make a great mentor for someone like Eric Satterfield to learn under for a season or two.

I believe the first year he was an assistant was in 2004 when Hagerman was the head coach and then he stayed on for Wolfe's couple of years and didn't come back until Palko started.
-
Re: Lee football carousel still rolling
Think Sat's better off as just wrestling HC. Also, as already mentioned a bit, heard the same thing with there being some issues amongst some of the assistants with some of the players; and there seemed to be some between the rest of the staff and Palko (apparently were still stuck in the triple option days). I think the surrounding staff actually hurt Palko more than anything really. A round with Robbins might be good, B.I. probably wouldn't be bad, but I kind of like one of the things said on the CMD forum with it being said that Harlan County's defensive coordinator possibly being interested.

Re: Lee football carousel still rolling
It seems like he was there when sanders was there and got out for a while. Phil wouldn't last either because it sounds as if the parents wouldn't have anything left to do. What assistants do get along all the time? Hope the new one can sit in there long enough to cycle a group of freshman through.

Wow that got me thinking and I don't believe a coach has got a group of freshmen through at Lee High since Don Williams' first run as coach (unless Allen Kinser did).
-
Re: Lee football carousel still rolling
Not 100% certain this all right, but I think this is the past coaching history for Lee:
1989-1992 Don Williams *record: 37-13 (record of 119-54-3 at Pennington)
1993-1996 Allen Kinser *record: 24-22
1997-1998 Don Williams *record: 15-9
1999 Gary Wolfe *record: 3-7
2000-2002 Brian Lee *record: 6-24
2003 Chris Hagerman *record: 1-9
2004-2005 Gary Wolfe *record: 4-16
2006-2008 Bobby Sanders *record: 13-17
2009 Brian Coomer *record: 2-8
2010-2011 Andy Palko, jr. *record: 7-13

Re: Lee football carousel still rolling
Yea, that's impressive. Looks like lee doesn't have a coaching problem after all. How can you question credentials with a history of changes like this? They need someone with fire and for the hierarchy to get out of the way. Reminds me of my wife's vehicle, trades when the tires are bald instead of just getting the new treads. Success breeds success, but what the he'll happened there? Didn't realize it but I think they're surpassing John battle. Who woulda thought?

Re: Lee football carousel still rolling
I will say the first two or three were more justified. Wolfe's first go at it was with the interim tag applied with Williams retiring just before the start of the '99 season. B. Lee didn't show much progress with the teams, Hagerman was fired for good reason after the incident with the students, Wolfe resigned after his second stint..although I think it was said that it was one of those resign or be fired deals. Sanders resigned to back to Mississippi (and I would say if he had another losing season they would have cut him too with the way people were beginning to talk), and then they didn't Coomer or Palko either much of a chance...1-2 seasons isn't much of an opportunity. Some think this SB is a good group but we've heard it before and I'll not expect anything good or one that will be even given much of chance until we see something different.

Re: Lee football carousel still rolling
Looks like Williams seen the writing on the wall
-
Re: Lee football carousel still rolling
Lee took a heavy hit with graduation after the '98 season (lost Satterfield, Buchanan, Cantor..etc.). I think it was health problems that forced Williams to retire just a couple of weeks before the season started. Wolfe took over on short notice and Lee started that year off 0-4 I believe, then turned around and fisnished up a little better the second half of the season. Through those early '00 years they weren't lacking for talent any. The jobs done then I think ultimately set the tone for the tough go from the on. I thought Sanders had something good possibly going on. Lee's only winning season since '98 came in '07 with a 7-3 year. Shouldn't be any reason they can't be back on track to at least a fairly good program but hard to do it the way the powers that be want it. Stop allowing the parents/boosters to control things and have such a hand that they do would be a nice first step.
-
Re: Lee football carousel still rolling
That 98 team was loaded, as well as 97 when you add in Calton. Bailey, Wynn, Wilder, Day in 98 as well. I grew up playing LL football and basketball against them and was friends with a few. Lebanon upset them in 98 to win the Highlands.

Re: Lee football carousel still rolling
The people hiring and firing these football coaches in Lee County .......you can tell at face value that it is political and that all of them are Republicans. Why? Because there is a new frontrunner every year to be the head coach at the school. But....maybe they are all Democrats because the school board..... which is akin to a local government body, has definitely got their hands, feet, legs, arms and nose into anything and everything out there with sports. So I guess just call them the Democratic Republicans.
If I am a football coach and I see this track record of how many different head coaches the school has went through and they are offering me a job.....I have them guarantee me in writing with all of them signing the sheet that I will be there at least 4 to 5 years......and if I haven't done anything after the 5th year then get rid of me. But change like this... I would look at them and think... why would I work for a bunch of parental psychos who feel their kids are the best and they haven't done squat since Chris Day was there.
Lee High football + musical chairs football coaches = losers for life.
You think losing is bad now. God have mercy on your players souls when the VHSL reclassifies.

They went to the State finals after Chris Day; and 2 semifinal apppearnces even after that ('91, '97).

Not very long removed from AA and they've been a bit better recently than they were in that final stretch.
