The following essay was sent to me by Sycamore who, due to technical difficulties, asked that I post it.

    ****copied from bb at Groucho's***********
Some versions of the posts give the impression that it's a recent commentary by it's author, Gordon Sinclair. While Sinclair is known as one of Canada's greatest broadcasters, he died in 1984 so could hardly comment on the WTC/Pentagon attack.

Obviously people have not only failed to cite the Canadian paper that reprinted it, but to note the fact that Sinclair broadcasted "America: The Good Neighbor" in 1973 in response to the Vietnam War. His bio's at

    ******end of copy*******

Nonetheless, this is a very moving essay, and I am glad to post it here.

    ********************************************
    America: The Good Neighbor.

"This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth. Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts.

None of these countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States. When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.

When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped. The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, warmongering Americans.

I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10?

If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes? Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles. You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon - not once, but several times - and safely home again.

You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at. Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here.

When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke.

I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake.

Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of those."

    Printable US Flag

I lost the url for the page where I got this graphic so I made my own page.

    <A HREF="http://www.treebeard.net/MightyLady/AmerFlag.html" TARGET=_blank>http://www.treebeard.net/MightyLady/AmerFlag.html</a></A>

This flag doesn't print out as a whole page from the web page but you can save it and insert it in Word or WordPerfect and size it to fill the page.

I find this graphic to be truer in color and less distorted than the images from the page that fan posted. The purist in me likes the image on my page better.

    To Our Canadian Friend:

I can think of one case when a nation rushed to help the United States. During the Iran hostage crisis, it was Canada that made its embassy in Teheran available to anyone who could need refuge--at the risk of making targets of Canadian nationals. I still remember Canadians being cheered at and waved at by Floridians that year as they came south on vacation.

American decency as well as American resolve is going to be put to the test now. The terrorists have exactly what they want. They have forced us into a position where we have to strike at Islamic states to protect ourselves--and this is sure to increase hatred of Americans in places like Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and other countries that until now have been either allies or quasi-friends. We can't avoid military action against states harboring terrorists. But we should realize that that, just as we are demanding that countries prove their friendship to us, we still have to prove our friendship in return. So every time a natural disaster hits a poor Islamic country, Americans should be the first and the most generous with relief. Of course, those who truly hate us will discount anything good we do--but maybe our actions can speak louder than their words.

AsIs, glad to hear the Cybersites folks are all okay. Bad business people perhaps, but good people nevertheless.

Merle sent me an Email after I inquired as to thesource.:

Bush said that, apparently in a meeting with Sen. Schumer of NY. There is
an article in Newsweek about that meeting. Schumer was being very
complimentary of Bush, and may have related that quote. I'm not sure if
reporters were actually present when Bush said it.

    Question

<font face="georgia">No doubt you've seen the Nostradamus prediction (and subsequent challenges to it's authentication). Here's a link to the web page that has a pretty good detailed analysis of why that particular "hoax" came about. Acutally, the site is pretty interesting overall.

This is the first I've been here since the horrible events. I am relieved to hear the news of friends in safety.

I have been finding communication on the internet comforting. Bless you all.
