World's Largest Aquarium Opening In Georgia
It's opening a couple of hours from Augusta and already curious sea lovers are showing up for a preview of the world's largest fish tank.
The Georgia Aquarium has more than 100-thousand animals in eight million gallons of water and a viewing window that's more than 20 feet tall.
From beluga whales in an arctic environment to coral reefs, coastlines and rivers, there are 60 different habitats and creatures from around the world now all under one roof.
But these guys may be the biggest attraction.. in more ways than one.
Ralph and Norton two whale sharks now about 16 feet, should grow to around 40 feet.
Whale sharks are the world's largest fish. Two came from Taiwan via UPS! Not your every day delivery.
With a project this big, there were some other very large challenges -- like installing this huge aquarium window. But perhaps the biggest story here is the huge generosity that made it all possible.
Home Depot co-founder Bernie Marcus donated 200 million dollars of his own money to give Atlanta this gift.
With wide eyes everywhere today it's clear Marcus' dream is already making a splash... introducing a new generation to the wonders of the sea.
The Aquarium is open to people who hold season passings Monday and Tuesday. It will open for everyone on Wednesday. It's located between Centennial Olympic Park and the Georgia Dome.
