I just saw the Dvd of Mayor of Sunset Strip, It was not what I expected. I found the movie to be very sad.
Rodney had so much influence during the late 60's and 70's & 80's but it seems that he is being brushed to the side of the road. It looks like it is because of people like Rodney, That Indy 103.1 and Jonesy's Jukebox is so popular.
I grew up believing that Rock N Roll could change the world, and as music changed so did I. It was DJ's Like Rodney that were my teachers, To grow we must learn or we stagnate and wither away. I hope & pray that Rodney does neither. Rock On Rodney

I agree that the story line does not serve Rodney well. His story has too many great elements and too many great people in it not to come out. I think the tone in telling the story has a lot to do with George Hickenlooper's painting Rodney as an excentric metaphor for the past when Rock was King and is now pushed to the side. I think the Crumb movie was a model.
Rodney was not pleased, but then he had no artistic control and ultimately was not given a lot of respect. As a matter of fact the movie is opening in London Friday, Feb.11 and they didn't want to pay for Rodney to fly out! Don't worry, on the same night, he is going to Brian Wilson's Grammy Celebration at the Palladium.
The amount of writing that Rodney did is never mentioned in the movie. He was tireless in getting the word out on new music. In archival research, he comes up everywhere. The moviemakers did make some content compromises, From what I hear, Kim Fowley was very unhappy with the original edit in his counterpoint the Cherie. It was ultimately changed to what it is today which is still one of my favorite parts of the movie. It is easy to overlook the brilliant editing. After all, the movie was shot over a five year period. All in all I still think it was an important movie to get out. Maybe they can do a part two.
