A bill passed by the House raises the minimum wage to $7.25 an hour everywhere except American Samoa - and Speaker Nancy Pelosi is being questioned whether that exception was made to benefit Del Monte-owned StarKist, which employs most of the island's work force.




January 13, 2007 -- WASHINGTON - Red-faced House Speaker Nancy Pelosi went into damage-control mode yesterday after Republicans charged she slipped a loophole into the Democrats' just-passed minimum-wage bill to benefit a company in her San Francisco district.

The legislation hiking the minimum wage to $7.25 an hour covered the entire United States and all its territories - except for one: American Samoa.

The GOP said Samoa was exempted because Democrat Pelosi is protecting the food giant Del Monte Corp., which is based in her district. Del Monte owns StarKist Tuna, which employs more 5,000 Samoans, almost 75 percent of the island's work force.

The company had opposed the legislation, which passed Wednesday. The legislation increases the minimum wage from $5.15 an hour.

In the face of the GOP accusations that she delivered special favors to the company, Pelosi ordered the House Education and Labor Committee to study wages in American Samoa, the only U.S. territory not covered by basic federal minimum-wage laws.

"Our committee will review minimum-wage standards in American Samoa to determine how we can ensure the fair treatment of Samoa's workers," said Tom Kiley, spokesman for House Education and Labor Committee Chairman George Miller (D-Calif.).

Republicans trawling for attack lines against the new Democratic majority said the omission of American Samoa from the federal minimum-wage law stinks.

"This is nothing more than protecting a hometown company. It's an abuse of power," Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.) told The Post.

Wages in American Samoa and other U.S. territories are set by special industry committees under the Federal Department of Labor. Minimum pay varies by industry, but generally does not go above $4 an hour.

Most territories, such as Guam, follow the national laws, but wages in American Samoa remain low by national standards.

A spokeswoman for Del Monte denied the company lobbied Pelosi. Pelosi's spokeswoman also denied receiving any campaign contributions from Del Monte, which federal campaign records confirm.

"Two weeks into the minority and all the Republicans can do is go fishing," Pelosi spokeswoman Jennifer Crider told The Post.

The minimum-wage bill was drafted by Miller's committee, and Pelosi had little input on the nitty-gritty details of the legislation, House sources said.

Kiley noted that Republicans consistently blocked efforts to get the minimum wage to other territories during the years of their party's majority.

Somalia terror 'funded in Britain'

The Foreign Office is investigating reports of British casualties in US air strikes on al Qaida suspects in Somalia.

The attacks came amid claims that support for the Islamic militant movement had come from the UK.

Meanwhile, the United Nations' new secretary general Ban Ki-moon voiced fears on Wednesday that the air strikes could increase hostilities and harm civilians.

Following days of fierce fighting in the African country, the United States launched a series of air strikes against Islamic extremists it suspects of having links to al Qaida.

Ethiopia's prime minister has said that many international terrorists had been killed, injured or captured in the fighting - including Britons.

"Notwithstanding the motives for this reported military action," Ban's spokeswoman Michele Montas said, "the secretary general is concerned about the new dimension this kind of action could introduce to the conflict and the possible escalation of hostilities that may result."

Somalia's deputy prime minister has claimed that much of the funding for the Islamist militants was coming from Britain and that some of their fighters were British and American passport holders.

There was also condemnation from British-based Islamic groups of the US intervention in the conflict.

Ethiopian forces invaded Somalia, a largely Muslim country, last month to prevent an Islamic movement from ousting the weak, internationally recognised government from its lone stronghold in the west of the country.

Leaders of the Islamic movement have vowed to launch an Iraq-style guerrilla war in Somalia, and al Qaida chief Osama bin Laden's deputy has called on militants to carry out suicide attacks on the Ethiopian troops. There were reports at the weekend that British passport holders were involved in the fighting, which has claimed scores of lives.

LONDON (AFP) - A key official close to
Tony Blair has been arrested in connection with a probe into alleged party political corruption, the prime minister's official spokesman has said.

Ruth Turner, who is the director of government relations at Blair's Downing Street offices, was arrested at her home address in London and later released on bail, he added.

London's Metropolitan Police confirmed that a woman was arrested and bailed but did not name Turner, who performs a liaison role between government and Blair's governing Labour Party.

Turner, who was questioned but not arrested last year, is the fourth person to have been arrested in the "cash for honours" inquiry.

One of the others is Lord Michael Levy, now Blair's special envoy to the Middle East and Labour's main fundraiser, dubbed Lord Cashpoint by the media.

Detectives have questioned all of Blair's cabinet and in December quizzed Blair himself for two hours.

Officers are looking into whether Labour and other political parties offered seats in the unelected upper chamber of parliament, the House of Lords, in return for financial donations, which is illegal under the Honours (Prevention of Abuses) Act 1925.

A Scotland Yard spokesman confirmed the arrest of an unnamed person on suspicion of breaching the act and also on suspicion of perverting the course of justice.

"As a result of this development, additional investigation will be required before a final file can be submitted to the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service, which oversees criminal prosecutions in England and Wales)," a spokesman told AFP.

Observers had been expecting the police to hand over their report to the CPS later this month for a decision about whether to mount a prosecution.

Another Clinton in office would mean America being under the thiefdom of either a Bush or a Clinton for a total of at least 32 years, 36 if Hillary is re-elected (many now acknowledge that H.W. Hillary Clinton surprised few when she announced her intention to run for the 2008 presidency in New York on Sunday.

Forecasters are already predicting a success for the Senator, meaning Americans will probably be living under the same hierarchical oligarchy that brought them rampant illegal immigration, the devaluation of the dollar, the gigantic deficit, 9/11, and hatred of the U.S. around the world. The electorate got bored of drinking Coke so now the establishment is going to provide Pepsi.

Clinton voted for the Patriot Act and she voted for the war in Iraq, but so many Democrats are blinded by the cult of personality that they will overwhelmingly vote to put this crime family back in office. While we have made some progress in educating liberals as to the phony staged consensus of the left-right paradigm, the fact remains that a majority still see the White House as some kind of political super bowl, where the success of their 'team' is the be all and end all - to the expense of America as a whole.

"I felt that it was appropriate under the circumstances, which really went back to 1998 under the Clinton administration's conclusion that the regime had to change, that the President (Bush) had authority to pursue that goal," said Hillary after giving her personal approval for the mess in Iraq.

The punch and judy show theatre of the troop surge debate characterizes Hillary's role in hoodwinking Americans perfectly. The debate is framed as not whether the U.S. should get out of Iraq altogether, but the relative minutia of whether to feed 20,000 more troops into the meat grinder or not. The Democrats play along with this farce and make empty threats of "non-binding resolutions" that have no teeth and mean absolutely nothing.

Clinton's campaign manager has already compared Hillary to former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and has outlined her style as "Strong on foreign policy. People have got to know you are going to keep them safe." This translates as more war, more dead Americans, and a further desecration of the tattered shreds of what's left of the U.S. Constitution.

Clinton is the ultimate elitist and represents the Democrats supposed base, the poor and downtrodden, about as much as Lindsay Lohan represents grace and dignity. She was sure to inform the likes of David Rockefeller and Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands as to her presidential aspirations during her visit to last year's Bilderberg conference in Ottawa Canada. Bilderberg has a proven history of acting in a kingmaker capacity. Both Bill Clinton and Tony Blair attended before becoming President and Prime Minister and the media reported that Bilderberg selected John Edwards as Kerry's running mate in 2004.

Hillary's presidential financiers include Neo-Con kingpin and Fox News owner Rupert Murdoch , with whom she often meets and parties with along with Roger Ailes and other Republican big wigs. While Bill has been hanging around with the Bushes, Hillary has also been living it up with the likes of Newt Gingrich, Bill Frist, John McCain and Rick Santorum.

The Clintons and the Bushes have been known to vacation together in more recent times. Last year on CBS, Clinton revealed that he looks upon the Bushes as a surrogate family, and how Barbara Bush refers to him as "her son" . Is this really a picture of two distinct and opposed political ideologies pitted against one another?

In 2005, George W invited both Clintons as guests of honor and praised them to the hilt as he unveiled portraits of the two to be hung in the White House. Bush described him as having "...a great compassion for people in need... a man of enthusiasm and warmth". This after Bush's 2000 campaign was built around Clinton having no honor or dignity whilst in the White House.

A national poll carried in the Washington Post Sunday has Clinton leading closest Democrat contender Sen. Barack Obama by 24% and projects her to beat anyone the Republicans can offer, with the possible exception of former New York Mayor and 9/11 shill Rudolph Giuliani.

A massive grassroots campaign needs to be activated immediately to challenge liberals who profess anti-war sentiments to vote for a real anti-war candidate, Congressman Ron Paul , a man who voted against the illegal invasion of Iraq unlike Hillary Clinton and who also unlike Hillary is firmly opposed to embroiling America in any further foreign entanglements such as Iran.

We need to support the stance of Cindy Sheehan, who has vowed to oppose Hillary, and utilize Sheehan's considerable influence to sink Clinton's candidacy.

At the very least we can take as many votes away from Hillary as possible, even if it means someone like Obama getting in office, and wrestle America free from the ownership of the same gaggle of crooks that have ruthlessly sat on their autocratic power monopoly for the past 30 years.
