Another clue. The, popular and well loved, star of the U.S. version passed away suddenly a couple years ago, resulting in his then sitcom having to be re-tooled.

I do have a guess on the U.S. show.
    Three's Company!

I'll see if I can determine if it was based on a British show!

Dang, I think maybe I heard that once!

You are correct on the guess, the U.S. version is indeed Three's Company, and yes it was based on a British tv series, as were both spinoffs of both versions.

Well, I am sure I have exceeded the time limits Al. Thanks for the extra clue! I feel I should know the U.S. show at least but I just can't come up with the answer!
    And it's driving me crazy!

It's Man About The House, Al. Final answer!

    Summary

Robin Tripp (Richard O'Sullivan) thinks he's died and gone to heaven when he finds himself sharing a flat with Chrissy (Paula Wilcox) and Jo (Sally Thomsett).

Unfortunately for him, sharing a flat is as close to heaven as he gets with either of the girls.

Meanwhile, landlord George Roper (Brian Murphy) and his wife Mildred (Yootha Joyce) are always on hand to keep everyone on the straight and narrow.

This programme spawned two successful spin-off programmes, Robin's Nest and George And Mildred. It was later remade for the US market as Three's Company.

Then the Ropers was a spin off but I don't know what other show was a spin off in the U.S.

I know John Ritter had just started a new sitcom when he passed away but I don't remember the title of it and it was not related to Three's Company as far as I know.

    Was there another spin off?

    Found it Al.
Three's A Crowd with just Jack and his new girlfriend. Ran only one season.

Give the man a cigar. That covers everything.

Just a bit of trivia regarding Robin Tripp and Jack Tripper. Where Jack pursued the girls to no avail, Robin, near the end of the british series finally succeeded. I recall the Man About the House episode fairly well after all these years. Jo went away for a few days. Robins room was in need of repair, water damage it might have been (not sure) which left him on the sofa, and once again trying to at least share Chrissies room. Finally she tells Robin that if she gave in she would hate herself in the morning. Thought for moment and said, "I could sleep in 'til noon." The scene ended with Robin heading into her room and the door closing behind him, fade to black.

Eat your heart out Jack Tripper.

As for John Ritter's last series it was 8 Simple Rules. As far as I know it's still running.

As for Robin's Nest and Three's A Crowd, in both of these Jack And Robin open their own restaurants. In Robin's Nest there he had a one armed man as his dishwasher.

    Great Cigar Al. Thanks! smokin

Hey, talk about spooky wierdness and big time coincidence rolled into one.......
Last night I decide to watch Three's Company. I know they play back to back episodes on TV Land but I seldom, if ever, watch it. Last night, because of this new interest you have created with your TV Game, I decided to watch it!
Low and Behold, it was the final 2-part episode which also launched the Three's A Crowd spin-off!

All I could think is "WOW! That Al Bundy is sumpin!"

    Keep on keeping on dude!

    Glad you enjoyed the cigar.

Watching Three's Company brings back memories doesn't it?

Now, if anyone is interested here are a couple more who am I's to solve. These should be easier then the British one.

late '60s to early '70s tv.

What are these series and who is the main character, and who played them?

    1) In San Francisco I and my team solved cases every week, and I never even got out of my chair to do any legwork myself.

    2) This two time oscar winner, little taller than the oscars she won, played this religious character in a comedy series. This series helped her career take flight.
