Beatles- 2nd biggest Album act of 00's

Chart Watch Extra: The Top 20 Album Sellers Of The 2000s
by Paul Grein in Chart Watch

Eminem, who was born 2-1/2 years after the Beatles broke up, is the only artist who has sold more albums in this decade than the fabled foursome. Eminem's new album Relapse sold 608,000 copies this week, lengthening his lead as the artist who has sold the most albums in the 2000s. The rap superstar has sold 31,127,000 albums since the first week of January 2000. In second place: The Beatles, who have sold 27,591,000 albums in the same period. (That's not bad for a group that broke up in 1970.) The Beatles have done better in this decade relative to the competition than they did in the ?90s, when they were the #5 album-selling act.

Only four of the top 20 album sellers of the 1990s also rank among the top 20 album sellers so far in the 2000s. The Fab Four is joined by Metallica, Alan Jackson and Celine Dion. Nielsen/SoundScan, which has tracked sales for Billboard since 1991, doesn't carry a list of the top album sellers of the 2000s on its site. But the information is all there, if you know where to look (and can do simple subtraction).

Garth Brooks and Mariah Carey, the top two album sellers of the 1990s, don't rank among the top 20 album sellers so far in the 2000s. Other ?90s titans have slipped even more dramatically in this decade. Michael Bolton, who sold more than 20 million albums in the ?90s, has sold just 1,809,000 albums since January 2000. Vince Gill, who sold more than 15.5 million albums in the ?90s, has sold 2,825,000 albums in this decade. Yanni, R.E.M., Boyz II Men, Alanis Morissette, Billy Joel and Van Halen have each sold less than 5 million albums in this decade, also a far cry from their ?90s tallies.

Seven of the top 20 album-selling acts so far in the 2000s are country, six are rock, four are pop and three are rap. This represents a big gain for rap (none of the top 20 acts of the 1990s were rap). Five of the top 20 acts first hit The Billboard 200 in this decade. Four others had charted in the 1990s, but didn't rank among Nielsen/SoundScan's top 200 artists of that decade. Thus, 9 of the top 20 artists so far in the 2000s registered in a big way only in this decade.

Here are the 20 acts that have sold the most albums since the first week of January 2000. The number immediately after the artist's name is the total number of albums that the artist has sold in this decade. I also identify when the artist first cracked The Billboard 200, and the title of their best-selling album since January 2000.

    1. Eminem, 31,127,000. First charted: 1999. Eminem, 36, is the top male artist and the top rap artist so far in this decade. His 2000 album The Marshall Mathers LP is his best-seller. It has sold 10,178,000 copies.

    2. The Beatles, 27,591,000. First charted: 1964. The Beatles have sold more albums in the 2000s than any other group, rock act or foreign act. Their 2000 compilation 1 is their best-seller. It has sold 11,402,000 copies. The Beatles were the #5 album-selling act of the 1990s.

    3. Tim McGraw, 24,295,000. First charted: 1994. McGraw, 42, is the #1 country artist so far in the 2000s, nosing out Toby Keith. McGraw was the #38 album-selling act of the ?90s. His 2000 compilation Greatest Hits is his best-selling album of the decade. It has sold 5,995,000 copies.

    4. Toby Keith, 24,189,000. First charted: 1993. Keith, 47, is the #2 country artist of this decade. His 2003 album Shock'n Y'All is his best-seller. It has sold 4,420,000 copies.

    5. Britney Spears, 22,937,000. First charted: 1999. Spears, 27, is the youngest artist on this list, edging out Josh Groban by one year. She is also #1 female artist in this decade. Her 2000 album, Oops!...I Did It Again, is her best-seller of the decade. It has sold 9,183,000 copies. Spears was the #108 album-selling act of the ?90s.

    6. Kenny Chesney, 21,396,000. First charted: 1996. Chesney, 41, is the #3 country artist of this decade. His best-selling album is 2004's When The Sun Goes Down, which has sold 4,111,000 copies.

    7. Nelly, 21,206,000. First charted: 2000. Nelly, 34, is the #1 new artist to emerge in this decade, edging out Linkin Park. He's also the #1 African American artist, edging out Jay-Z, and the #2 rap artist. Nelly's 2000 debut, Country Grammar, is his best-selling album. It has sold 8,454,000 copies.

    8. Linkin Park, 21,125,000. First charted: 2000. Linkin Park is the #2 rock group of the decade, behind the Beatles. It's also the #2 new artist. The band's 2000 debut album, Hybrid Theory, is its best-seller. It has sold 9,600,000 copies.

    9. Creed, 20,398,000. First charted: 1997. Creed is the #3 rock group of the decade. 1999's Human Clay is the band's best-selling album. It has sold 9,480,000 copies since January 2000. Creed was the #167 album-selling act of the ?90s.

    10. Jay-Z, 19,379,000. First charted: 1996. Jay-Z, 39, is the #3 rap artist of the decade. 2003's The Black Album is his best-selling album of this decade. It has sold 3,338,000 copies. Jay-Z was the #152 album-selling act of the ?90s.

    11. Nickelback, 19,158,000. First charted: 2000. The Canadian group is the #2 foreign act of this decade (after the Beatles). Nickelback is also the #3 new artist and the #4 rock group. 2005's All The Right Reasons is its best-seller, with sales of 7,159,000 copies.

    12. Josh Groban, 19,115,000. First charted: 2001. Groban, 28, is the #1 pop male artist of this decade. He's the #4 new artist. The pop/classical star's 2003 album Closer is his best-seller, with sales of 5,746,000 copies.

    13. Rascal Flatts, 18,831,000. First charted: 2000. The trio is the #1 country group of this decade, nosing out Dixie Chicks. It's also the #5 new act. 2004's Feels Like Today is the act's best-selling album. It has sold 5,134,000 copies.

    14. Metallica, 18,490,000. First charted: 1984. Metallica is the #1 hard rock act of the decade (unless you count the genre-bending Linkin Park). The band's 1991 blockbuster Metallica is the band's best-selling album of this decade. It has sold 3,691,000 copies since January 2000. Metallica was the #3 album-selling act of the ?90s.

    15. Alan Jackson, 18,479,000. First charted: 1990. Jackson, 50, is the oldest solo artist on this list, edging out Toby Keith. 2002's Drive is his best-selling album of this decade. It has sold 3,508,000 copies. Jackson was the #17 album-selling act of the ?90s.

    16. *NSYNC, 18,402,000. First charted: 1998. The boy band is the #1 pop group of this decade (assuming you classify the Beatles as rock). *NSYNC's 2000 album No Strings Attached is its best-seller, with sales of 11,111,000 copies. The quintet was the #80 album-selling act of the ?90s.

    17. Dixie Chicks, 18,293,000. First charted: 1998. The female trio is the #2 country group so far in this decade. 2002's Home is the act's best-selling album of this decade. It has sold 5,997,000 copies. Dixie Chicks was the #105 album-selling act of the ?90s.

    18. Johnny Cash, 17,860,000. First charted: 1958. The country legend, who died in 2003 at age 71, is the most surprising name on the list. He made it on the strength of an enormous catalog and a renewed focus on him after his death. His 1999 compliation 16 Greatest Hits is his best-seller of the decade. It has sold 2,846,000 copies since January 2000.

    19. Kid Rock, 17,606,000. First charted: 1999. Kid Rock, 38, is the #1 male rock artist of this decade. Kid's 2001 album Cocky is his best-seller of the decade. It has sold 5,045,000 copies.

    20. Celine Dion, 17,579,000. First charted: 1991. The Canadian diva, 41, is the #2 pop female artist of this decade, behind Britney Spears. Dion's 1999 greatest hits album, All The Way...A Decade Of Song, is her best-seller in the decade. It has sold 4,971,000 copies since January 2000. Dion was the #4 album-selling act of the ?90s.

The Fine Print: Artists who emerged very early in the decade stood a much better chance of making this list than artists who emerged later on. Sales peaked around 2000, and have been dropping since about 2004. So it's hard for even the hottest acts of recent years to compete with the stunning sales totals from the turn of the last decade.
Also, when I refer to the best-selling artists of the ?90s, I'm referring to the period from May 25, 1991, when Nielsen/SoundScan began tracking sales for Billboard, through the last week of 1999.

"That's not bad for a group that broke up in 1970"
    for sure!

    Re: What Up? (Musically Speaking)

It's not so easy to listen to music at home these days, so a lot of my music appreciation is being done while I'm on the cross trainer at the gym. I recently had the band Animal Collective recommended to me and have been enjoying an album called Strawberry Jam. It was good initially because it had the sort of beat that's good to exercise to, but the more I listen to it, the better it gets.

I've also been enjoying the New York Dolls latest, though I think that it might be more appropriate to call it a David Johansen album. Still, if him and Syl Sylvain are making some well earned cash by banking on the name, good luck to them.

Gordon Trueman Riviere Waller (June 4, 1945 in Braemar, Scotland - July 17, 2009 in Ledyard, Connecticut) was a singer/songwriter/guitarist, best known as "Gordon" of the 1960s duo Peter and Gordon, whose biggest hit was "A World Without Love".

spacerSunday New York Post - Charles Manson's Oveture To Phil Spector
    Category: Music
July 26, 2009 -- CHARLES Manson -- a third-rate musician before he turned homicidal cult leader -- still has twisted delusions about becoming a pop star and wants to consult with fellow jailbird Phil Spector. Rachelle Spector says her legendary music-producer hubby, now serving 19 years to life for the fatal shooting of actress Lara Clarkson, was recently transferred to Corcoran State Prison in central California, where Manson -- who masterminded the savage Tate/LaBianca killings 40 years ago -- is housed in a separate wing. Soon after he settled in, "a guard brought Philip a note from Manson, who said he wanted him to come over to his [lockup]. He said he considers Philip the greatest producer who ever lived," Rachelle told Page Six. "It was creepy. Philip didn't respond." Before his slaughter spree, Manson tried to launch a music career by hanging out with Doris Day's record-producer son, Terry Melcher, and Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys. The Beach Boys ended up recording two Manson songs -- one eerily titled "Cease To Exist," which the group changed to "Never Learn To Love." Melcher enraged Manson by severing ties and the maniac sent his gang to kill Melcher, whose former address was where Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate were living. The maniacs ended up killing Tate and four others on Aug. 9, 1969. Manson's old self-recorded songs have ended up on albums complied by collectors of the macabre and he's even taped new ones in prison. Spector's producing credits include the hits "Be My Baby," "Da Doo Ron Ron" and "Unchained Melody," and The Beatles' "Let It Be" album. "I think Manson wants to glean some musical advice from Phil, who was a '60s music god with his 'Wall of Sound,' " Spector publicist Hal Lifson told us. "But Phil's like, 'I used to pick up the phone and it was John Lennon or Celine Dion or Tina Turner, and now Charles Manson is trying to get a hold of me!' "

Overlooked acts: R&R Hall of Shame !!!

KISS is in the RRHOF but not Alice Cooper....WHY ????

THE Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is celebrating its 25th with mega concerts at Madison Square Garden. You’ll hear Aretha Franklin but not Chubby Checker, Metallica but not Iron Maiden. That’s because they’re not in the HOF. Neither are Joe Cocker, the Smiths or Hall & Oates

Rachael Ray, at least, is looking to change that last one. “Whether you love their music or not, they define ’80s music,” Ray tells The Post. “To be insulted in that way, it isn’t right.” She’s even started an online petition at rachaelrayshow.com to get Hall & Oates nominated. No one was more surprised by Ray’s support at a taping for her show than the pair themselves.

“When Rachael busted out with this whole thing — ‘Let’s do a petition’ — it was amazing,” says John Oates. (The episode airs Nov. 9.)

BREAKING NEWS: Aerosmith Says Steven Tyler Has Quit ....

    By Dave Itzkoff

    Steve McEnroe/Associated Press

    aerosmith190
Steven Tyler told a British music magazine that he planned to work on ?Brand Tyler.?The sweet emotions that the members of Aerosmith once felt towards each other have apparently come to an end. In an interview with The Las Vegas Sun, the group?s lead guitarist, Joe Perry, said that the singer Steven Tyler quit after a concert in Abu Dhabi. ?Steven quit as far as I can tell,? Mr. Perry told The Sun. ?I don?t know anymore than you do about it.?

Mr. Perry was responding to remarks that Mr. Tyler made in an interview with Classic Rock, a British music magazine, in which Mr. Tyler said that he was preparing to focus on a solo career. ?I don?t know what I?m doing yet,? Mr. Tyler said, ?but it?s definitely going to be something Steven Tyler: working on the brand of myself - Brand Tyler.?

Mr. Perry said he had had difficulty confirming this with Mr. Tyler because the singer doesn?t return his phone calls. ?He?s notorious for that,? Mr. Perry told The Sun. ?That?s one thing I?ve learned to live with. I try to overlook it.?

Aerosmith canceled several concerts over the summer amid an injury-plagued season after Mr. Tyler fell from a stage on Aug. 5. A publicist for the band did not immediately return a request for comment.

    FALSE ALARM.....

Joe Perry Says Aerosmith Not Breaking Up ? But They Need A Singer!

    Tuesday, November 10, 2009 10:12AM - By Jeffrey Hyatt

    joeperry steventyler

The news of Steven Tyler?s exit as lead vocalist for Aerosmith has shaken up the rock n? roll world. But guitarist Joe Perry says the band will go on ? with or without Tyler belting out all those memorable tunes. Perry took to Twitter late Monday to say that Aerosmith is ?not splitting up? but ?looking for a new singer to work with.?

So there you go Aerosmith fans ? welcome to your very own version of David Lee Roth vs. Sammy Hagar, a debate that has been part of Van Halen?s legacy since the mid-?80s. Looks like Aerosmith fans need to prepare for someone else singing ?Dream On,? ?Draw the Line? and the rest of the bluesy-rock hits Aerosmith is famous for.

And so the search begins for the next lead singer of Aerosmith.

Let the parlor games begin. Ramp up the rumors. Begin the wild speculation.

Across the web, conversation about possible replacements have already begun; one name that pops ups a lot is Stone Temple Pilots? Scott Weiland, certainly not lacking for that Tyler-esque swagger and fits the hard-livin?/hard-rockin? model Aerosmith built its reputation on.

Perry and the guys could go the Journey route and find a total unknown, in their case Arnel Pineda, who has done as well as can be expected having to fill the gigantic shows of former Journey vocalist Steve Perry.

Axl Rose and Kid Rock are also names that have come up for discussion.

It?s absolutely nice work if you can get it.

It?s not a perfect science when having to replace a frontman who is forever associated with a particular band. INXS moved on after the sad passing of lead singer Michael Hutchence, but no doubt they haven?t been back to the heights (at least in the US market) they achieved with the original version of the group. But they keep going, and that?s awesome, because INXS should keep playing.

It?s a touchy subject because some fans just might not be able to accept Aerosmith without Tyler out front. Their first album debuted in ?72, so we?re talking about a lot of fans who have seen Tyler and Aerosmith go up and down and up again, all the while producing some truly amazing rock n? roll.

If Perry wants to keep the band going then fans will just have to wait and see how it plays out. Whoever it is, they probably won?t be able to sing ?Rats in the Cellar? quite as perfect as Tyler, but that doesn?t mean Aerosmith won?t be just as terrific ? just different.

And Lord knows Aerosmith could stand to get more youthful. Tyler is 61! And speaking of Tyler post-Aerosmith, I think he should call Noel Gallagher right away.

PIRATE RADIO - When Rock Ruled The Seawaves.....

    November 13, 2009
    [email protected]

    PirateRadio

Pirate Radio" shines a light on a neglected little truth about rock music: Its true nature is less "Won't Get Fooled Again" or "Satisfaction" than "Yellow Submarine."

All the bubble and bounce (and seaworthiness) of the latter song defines Richard Curtis' affectionate 1960s comedy about a boat that rocked, just off British territorial waters. It broadcast pop tunes to a grateful audience when the airwave-controlling BBC largely refused to play such tommyrot.

The boat is a libertarian wonderland in which an American deejay (Philip Seymour Hoffman), a wacky owner (Bill Nighy) and a dandified lothario (Rhys Ifans) frolic in peace, free of all government intrusion -- until a buzz-cut Cabinet minister (a briskly hateful Kenneth Branagh, who trained for this part by playing a Nazi in HBO's "Conspiracy") tries to invent a reason to shut it down.

    FULL REVIEW

S6: Looks good and we plan to see it over the weekend !

A Lovely lady from Holland named Fieneke told me of two Pirate Radio Ships that operated off the Dutch Coast called Radio Noordzee and Veronica on ships at the North Sea playing music....

If any of our Overseas Members can enlighten us about this it would be appreciated !

    Re: What Up? (Musically Speaking)

The curse of Friday the 13th struck Bruce Springsteen in a most unusual way: it made the 60-year-old rock legend forget where he was.
The Boss bellowed "Hello, Ohio!" to his fans at the Auburn Hills Palace in Michigan.
Springsteen referred to the neighboring state several times in the following 30 minutes until E Street Band guitarist Steve Van Zandt whispered in his ear.
A visibly embarrassed Springsteen grinned and said such a mistake was "every front man's nightmare."
The Detroit Free Press says Springsteen rocked the forgiving audience for nearly three hours Friday night with new and old hits including a complete performance of his album "Born to Run."

Gus & Co: HERE WE GO AGAIN (Sigh!)

Lita Ford Wary of Upcoming Runaways Movie

Nov 13th 2009 by Jon Wiederhorn

Legendary female rock band the Runaways were only around for five years (1975 to 1979), yet during that time there were more misconceptions, rumors and urban legends than there were about almost any other group. And, according to guitarist Lita Ford, the half-truths haven't come to an end.

The metal goddess has recently spoken out against the upcoming movie 'The Runaways,' which is scheduled to come out next year and stars Scout Taylor Compton as Ford, Kristen Stewart as vocalist and rhythm guitarist Joan Jett and Dakota Fanning as keyboardist Cherie Currie.

'The Runaways' is being directed by Floria Sigismondi, a photographer and filmmaker who directed 'Postmortem Bliss' in 2006 and has also directed music videos for Marilyn Manson, David Bowie, the Cure and Muse.

"I sure didn't want anything to do with this," Ford says. "They're using my name, and that makes me nervous as some of the people involved have tried to destroy my career since 1980."

Despite her uneasiness about the film, Ford has kind things to say about 20-year-old Compton, who traveled to Lake Tahoe to see one the performances on her 'Wicked Wonderland' tour.

"After meeting Scout, I feel so much better," Ford reveals. "She has a heart and soul, unlike some of the people behind the movie. She also hawks a mean loogey and really is a lot like me. We both cried the first time we spoke. Scout rocks."

Compton has similar feelings about Ford: "Lita Ford is an icon of rock and has always been a personal hero of mine," she says. "I can't wait for her to see the film. I put my heart and soul into portraying her and to find out she is such an amazing person was truly a blessing for me. It's something I'll never forget."

Compton, who actually plays guitar and sings, has performed in numerous major films, including Rob Zombie's 'Halloween,' 'April Fool's Day' and 'Obsessed,' which also featured pop superstar Beyonc?.
