I'd just like to wish you all a Happy Burns' Night. You probably don't know what I'm talking about, and maybe haven't heard of Robert Burns. I encountered a lot of Americans when I was at the University of Aberdeen, and despite them being of Scottish descent (they were from Ohio) about 50% of them didn't know that he is Scotland's national poet and that on the 25th January we have a thing called a Burns' Supper when we serve Haggis, tatties and neeps (potatoes and turnip). The haggis is addressed - 'Great chieften o' the puddin' race' - the lassies toasted (Burns liked the lassies) and then copious amounts of whisky is consumed. Even if you haven't heard of him, you may have sung one of his songs at New Year: 'Auld Lang Syne'. I'd like to quote you the final verse from one of my favourite poems of his:
Then let us pray that come what may,
As come it will for a' that,
That sense and worth, o'er a' the earth,
May bear the gree, and a' that.
For a' that, and a' that,
It's comin yet for a' that,
That man to man, the warld o'ver,
Shall brothers be for a' that.
