At the Hobb's End Underground Station, Several Workmen are in the process of clearing section of ground when they come across a skull and soon afterwards and old human skeleton.....
From....http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0062168/plotsummary
While digging a new subway line in London, a construction crew discovers first: a skeleton, then what they think is an old World War II German missle. Upon closer examination the "missle" appears to be not of this earth! This movie examines the age old question of how we came to be on this planet. It is suprisingly scary.
Summary written by KC Hunt {}
Workers excavating at an underground station in London uncover the skeletal remains of ancient apes with large skulls. Further digging reveals what is at first believed to be an unexploded German bomb from World War II. Missile expert Colonel Breen is brought in to investigate, accompanied by Professor Bernard Quartermass. When the interior of the "missile" is exposed, a dead locust-like creature that resembles the devil is found. It is determined by Quartermass that these "locusts" are evil Martians who altered the brains of our simian ancestors to eventually lay claim to the Earth. When Quartermass's suspicion that the missile can reactivate the dormant evil in humans is confirmed, all **** breaks loose.
I first saw this on the CBS Sunday Night Movie in 1972 when I was a nipper since my Folks let me have the Parlour TV while they were talking with friends over Coffee in the dining room. It made a great impression on me as kid and I never grew tired of watching it over the years....
Andrew Keir played Quatermass like a master actor and Jim Donald & Barbara Shelley did an excellent job as well. Special note to Julian Glover as the hard *** British Army Officer Colonel Breen whose scenes with Keir and the rest are well acted and played off....
Roy Ward Baker who also directed Classic A NIGHT TO REMEMBER did a kick **** job with the limited budget and actors and crafts every scene well. This is one of Hammer Films Classic Movies and proved they could do more than the Peter Cushing-Christopher Lee Horror Staples....
My favourite scenes......
Professor Quatermass and a PC exploring several abandoned buildings near the Hobb's End Tube Station and seeing the PC break into a nervous sweat whilst explaining what happened there to cause the desertion by the families who lived there....
Quatermass, Colonel Breen, and Drill Specialist Sladden watch in awe and horror as the Martian Creatures appear in the Spacecraft....
Sladden being possessed by the malevolant Martian Life Force as he runs to the safety of a nearby church
The explosion and panic occuring during the Press Conference in which Breen & Co. dismiss the Craft as a German Propaganda Weapon ....
The apocalyptic disturbances and appearance of the Martian Force as a Horned Devil and Dr. Roney's self sacrifice in order to destroy the Force.....
This was based upon the Popular and Well Written Quatermass Series by Nigel Kneale and was serialised by the BBC in the 1950's. It does take a Anti-Military Tack when Quatermass and Col. Breen argue over the Militarisation of Outer Space but gets put aside when both men confront the Martian Menace....
One of the ironies is that this film was filmed and released in the UK before Kubrick's 2001 was released. When it was released in the US in 1968, Critics ripped it for being a ripoff of Kubricks film !
I almost forgot but my all time favorite sci-fi film would be the planet of the apes.

Speaking of Chuck Heston, THE OMEGA MAN was another SF film that scared the pants off me and I mentioned this during a Chiller Theatre Panel Cherie and several other of our guests were on when they were discussing what movies scared us the most growing up....
The thought of being the last normal human survivor of a plague that wiped out 99% of the world population while fighting off murderous zombies that once were our friends, family, and co-workers really chilled me...
Also this is being remade as the upcoming Will Smith Flick I AM LEGEND...

The original although i did like the remake it just couldn't compare to the first.
I agree! I loved the entire Planet Of The Apes series of movies! Especially the first three!
The remake and the TV series paled in comparison, imo!
