'The Runaways' may be most buzzed-about film

Joan Jett concert and world premiere this weekend

"Let me tell you what we been doin'

Neon angels on the road to ruin."
    The Runaways

By the time back in the mid-70s when the then-shuffling lineup of the all-girl rock band "The Runaways" was finally set somewhat in stone, guitarist/vocalist Joan Jett and lead singer Cherie Currie were ready to rumble. Not quite yet with each other but that would come soon enough.
The story of how the band came together under the influence of the manipulative L.A. rock-impresario Kim Fowley to become the poster children of tough-chick teen-age rock-and-roll has now been chronicled on film by writer/director Floria Sigismondi.
"The Runaways" will have its World Premiere Sunday, Jan. 24, at 6:30 p.m. at the Eccles Center as part of the TwentyTen Sundance Film Festival.
The buzz, and make no mistake, there's plenty of it surrounding this film, comes from many directions. First of all Sundance-vet Kristen Stewart, fresh from "New Moon," the latest episode in the "Twilight" saga ("Eclipse" is currently in post-production) and last year's Festival surprise "Adventureland," portrays the true rock-and-roll heart of the band, Joan Jett.
If that isn't enough, the film features the soon-to-turn-16 Dakota Fanning in the other lead female role as Cherie Currie, the sex-kitten and front-and-center diva of the group, who favored a "Bowie/Bardot" look as part of her personal pubescent visual component. Jett flaunted more of a Suzie Quatro/Keith Richards guise at the time. Fanning, who you may recall made quite a stir in "Houndog" back at Sundance 2007, coincidentally, or maybe not, also sandwiched this role between parts in "New Moon" and "Eclipse." Ms. Stewart, on the other hand was able to likewise fit "Welcome to the Rileys," which, too, is screening at this year's fest, into that gap. A couple of busy young ladies who see a lot of each other, it would seem.

The fact that "Joan Jett and the Blackhearts" will be doing that thing they do on stage Saturday night, Jan. 23, at Harry O's (tonight), also infuses the film premiere the next evening with more than a bit of excitation. The joint will be jumping, no worries there! And with only three screenings scheduled so far, waiting lines for those without hard tickets will probably not be short.
Jett, also a producer on the film, has long brandished an independent streak like Ani DiFranco, she owns her own record label, Blackheart Records. Over time, her music has brought her eight platinum and gold albums and nine Top 40 singles, not to mention a place as an originator, innovator, and visionary in the pantheon of the edgier side of rock.
More than your run-of-the-mill tale of teen-age excess, "The Runaways" follows these two very singular wild and crazy Southern California chicks from 1975 to 1977 through unrestrained agitation both within the sisterhood of the band and, especially, with each other. Not to mention their relationship with Fowley, the Svengali figure in their creative lives, portrayed by Michael Shannon.
No doubt the film is a major "rocker,' in that, besides showcasing actual music of The Runaways, writer/director Floria Sigismondi brings a long resume of directing hit rock videos to this project, her first feature.
A naturalized Canadian born in Italy and a fine-art photographer whose work is exhibited worldwide, Sigismondi is best known for her videos featuring Marilyn Manson, David Bowie, Bjork, The Cure, Christina Aguilara, The White Stripes, Incubus, The Raconteurs, and many others.
Due to her award-winning virtuosity in the genre, "The Runaways" will also turn a lot of heads cinematically, as is made quite evident by the short trailer for the film currently making the rounds. The camera work and visual elements combine to create some startlingly beautiful footage. I suppose, with Sigismondi at the helm, one shouldn't expect any less. The Runaways got real big real fast. In Japan for a sold-out tour, they were greeted like the Beatles, had their own TV special, and recorded a live album that went gold. As many who preceded and followed, they found it difficult to maintain perspective and hold it all together. They had fascinating times and made fascinating music. They were neon angels on the road to ruin.

'The Runaways' may be most buzzed-about film - The Park Record

It's all so FANtastic, I'm speechless!
    Rock on Cherie!

YouTube - Kristen Stewart & Dakota Fanning join Joan Jett and Cherie Currie on stage 1-23-2010

Check out this video, recorded at Joan Jett and the Blackhearts' performance on January 23rd, 2010 at Harry O's Club in Park City, Utah during the Sundance Film Festival. Occurred the night prior to the debut of the film, "The Runaways", which stars Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning who play the founding members of The Runaways, Joan Jett and Cherie Currie, respectively.

Near the end of the concert, Jett welcomed the two actresses on-stage, along with Cherie Currie, and she congratulated them on their performances in the film.

    From Wiki:
The Runaways is a 2010 biographical film, based on the 1970s all-girl rock band of the same name. The film was written and directed by Floria Sigismondi, and stars Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett, Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie, Stella Maeve as Sandy West, Scout Taylor-Compton as Lita Ford, and Michael Shannon as Kim Fowley. Alia Shawkat plays the band's bassist, a fictional character named Robin, created due to legal issues preventing the portrayal of bassist Jackie Fox.

The film follows two friends, Jett and Currie, as they rise from rebellious Southern California kids to rock stars of the now legendary group that paved the way for future generations of girl bands. They fall under the Svengali-like influence of rock impresario Kim Fowley, who turns the group into an outrageous success and a family of misfits. With its tough-chick image and raw talent, the band quickly earns a name for itself?and so do its two leads: Joan is the bands pure rock n roll heart, while Cherie, with her Bowie-Bardot looks, is the sex kitten. The film is partially based on lead-singer Cherie Currie's 1989 autobiography Neon Angel: The Cherie Currie Story which details her fractured childhood, the group's meteoric rise to fame, and her subsequent battle and recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.

The Runaways is set to open in wide release in America on March 19, 2010.

Thanks to RTMorasonMD for this cool YouTube video!!!

Re: The Runaways Movie & Cherie's Book_the Latest Scoop!

    Sundance Review: The Runaways

    by Kevin Kelly Jan 24th 2010 // 9:02PM

I'll be blunt about this: I really wasn't looking forward to this movie. I'm not the biggest fan of lip-chewing, hair-twirling Kristen Stewart, or the wide-eyed, blank face expert Dakota Fanning. I love rock and roll (so put another dime in the jukebox, baby) as much as the next person, but these two starring in a movie about an all-girl, teen sensation, flash in the pan band from the 1970s? I just didn't think they could pull it off. Hey, at least I'm big enough to admit I was wrong. The Runaways rocked the Joan Jett / Cherie Currie backstory's pants off (literally), and I'll be buying the soundtrack, which features K-Stew and D-Fan singing the blasts from the past.

However, this movie really should have been called The Joan Jett & Cherie Currie Show, because the other Runaways are hardly featured in this movie at all. Sandy West (who co-founded the band with Joan Jett), and Lita Ford's stories aren't given much attention in the film, and Ford seems to exist just to cause drama. Additionally, The Runaways had six different bass players during their short four-year history (including Micki Steele who went on to The Bangles) so the filmmakers decided to create a fictional girl named Robin Robins. She's played by Alia Shawkat of Arrested Development fame, and she unfortunately gets only one or two lines.

Although he's not given as much screen time as Fanning and Stewart, Michael Shannon takes this movie, straps it to his back, and walks away with it completely. He plays their over the top manager Kim Fowley, and he looks like Frankenstein meets David Bowie. He chews up scenery left and right and steals every moment he's onscreen, even when he has no lines. At one point, he just gives a monsterly grimace on the other end of a phone call, and owns that entire moment. When he realizes he's bottled the lightning, he caws "You bitches are gonna be bigger than the fucking Beatles!" Although the relationship between Currie and Jett is caustic at times, Fowley is definitely the bad guy in this movie.

In the effort of cramming their story into two hours, the film rushes through the Joan Jett story as she rags on her guitar teacher for trying to instruct her with "On Top Of Old Smoky" and telling her "Girls don't play electric guitar." In a blink, she's meeting Kim Fowley at Rodney Bingenheimer's English Disco in Hollywood, and Fowley, smelling money and opportunity, introduces Jett to drummer Sandy West. They start jamming with Fowley listening, who is seemingly coked to the gills with a bent towards pedophilia. He decides the band needs, as he so eloquently illustrates with his finger pointed at a woman's crotch, more sex. He and Jett go trolling for the face of the band back at Bingenheimer's, where they find Mountain Dew-sipping Fanning, complete with feathered-blonde hair, and ask her to audition.

Fast-forward to Jett and West now with Lita Ford and their fictitious bass player rehearsing in a ramshackle trailer in the Valley. Currie shows up to audition, having rehearsed a Suzi Quatro cover song all night, but Fowley quickly nixes it. They end up writing "Cherry Bomb" on the spot, and with some coaxing, Currie nails it. Then he puts the girls through rock and roll boot camp, which includes teenaged boys throwing trash and dog**** at them, so they can learn how to deal with hecklers. With lightning speed, they're off and running, playing parties in Los Angeles, hitting the road for shows, cutting a record, and touring Japan.

But the real story takes place in the cracks between the electric soundtrack. Kristen Stewart steps out of her normal angsty girl act and nails down the punk rock, hard as nails Jett, and Fanning is equally as good with her disconnected portrayal of Currie, who is dealing with the fact that she's abandoning her alcoholic father and her twin sister Marie (played as fraternal in the movie, although they were identical in real life) to embrace a life of rock and roll. It's not long before the girls are full-on in the swing of drugs while on the road, and Fanning and Stewart share an extremely intimate kiss on the floor of a skating rink before the camera swirls them up into a heavily implied sex scene, which is something the movie doesn't shy away from. We see Fowley banging some woman while on a phone call, Currie having sex in a dressing room, and Jett teaching Sandy West how to masturbate ... to Farrah Fawcett.

The Runaways flamed out in four quick years, although that timeline feels a lot shorter in this film. By the time the band begins to break up, it only feels like a few months have passed, and that's the only real fault in the movie. To try and keep this under two hours long, they've compacted four years of the first influential, teenaged, all-girl rock band into the Almost Famous story. By the end of the film, Jett is enjoying the rise of her solo fame, and Currie has taken a different path. There are crawls telling us what happened to Jett, Currie, and Fowley, but no mention of the other Runaways, which mirrors the movie. Powerful performances from Stewart, Fanning, and Shannon, and a song showcase that puts in bold what the Runaways were all about, while giving a bit of short shrift to the other band members. These girls were, for a very short time, the Queens of Noise. Fanning's concert performance of "Cherry Bomb" will be ringing in your ears for days.

One final note: Beware Twihards and Twi-Moms, this is not your sweet and innocent Bella. Kristen Stewart's Joan Jett urinates on electric guitars, pops pills, snorts coke, and loves other ladies. Just a fair warning.

Since Dakota and Kristen are doing their own singing in the movie, has anyone heard what Runaways songs (besides Cherry Bomb of course) they perform? Can't wait for the soundtrack of this! OR the movie, lobby cards, Cherie's books, magazine tie ins, t-shirts, posters... well you get the picture LOL
