This is for those of you familiar with the Monty Python's sketch 'Blamange' in which aliens who want to win the Grand Slam tennis tournament at Wimbledon set about turning the entire human population Scottish because it is well known that Scots are rubbish at tennis. Well... In a few hours from now - 8.15am British time - Scot Andy Murray walks out to take part in the Grand Slam Australian Open tennis final. It isn't Wimbledon yet, but no British player has won a Grand Slam title in 74 years. Most of you will be in your beds, but we'll all be watching and cheering (or crying), so when you wake up those cheeky ruddy aliens will hopefully have been proved wrong.

There's something which makes Andy Murray's success that little bit special. You may remember the Dunblane massacre of 1996 when a lone gunman walked into Dunblane Primary School and shot dead 16 small children and their teacher. Andy Murray was a pupil at the school at the time and survived the shooting. The small town of Dunblane is already incredibly proud of him. Not forgetting his brother Jamie who has already won a mixed doubles championship title at - you've guessed it - Wimbledon.

As I write, Andy Murray has just lost the first set to his Serbian opponent, Novak Djokovic. It's going to be a tough morning.

I should point out my mistake in my earlier post. I should have said that no MALE British tennis player has won a Grand Slam title in 74 years. Virginia Wade won three in the 1970s, including Wimbledon in 1977. Sorry, ladies.
