How do you know how much space you are allowed? I've tried lots of things that were too big, and it just didn't show up at all...I settled on these animated gifs because they seem to take up less space than the average jpeg of the same size. [img]graemlins/hmmm.gif[/img]

The avatar shape is a perfect square, I believe 96x96 pixels. so any rectangular image is mashed into the square (why a lot of avatars distort & look funky).

And gifs have better compression than jpgs, identical images in each format & the gif will have a smaller file size. I haven't changed my avatar in so long, don't remember the max file size you're able to upload (46k sounds about right, but could very well be wrong).

Hehee, almost forgot. [img]redface.gif[/img] Niki ('Hope Unknown') & I were the ones who discovered the space could be used to upload HTML images into back in 2001, we were the very first two people to have avatars, before HB had to incorporate it into the script because of consistent requests in Admin to 'Make This Pic My Image!'. I haven't seen Niki online in a long time, her board long since gone, so guess I'm the estranged-father of Hostboard avatars. [img]tongue.gif[/img]

Well it looks like Cherie is winning this 'CCoolest Avatar' poll but I think voter turn out is a little too low, to call it over, at this juncture. Obviously Cherie's Lil' Angel Avatar should be winning by a total landslide! It's just so adorable!
