A friend e-mailed me yesterday stating that Fox News just declared the Pope had died.

I turned on MSNBC to get the skinny and was greeted with the headline, "Pope's Condition Worsening".

Either Fox News got yet another big story horribly wrong, or MSNBC was engaging one of the biggest bits of journalistic understatement ever.

Either way, it seemed it would better off handled as the Python parrot sketch with Fox News playing the John Cleese role of maintaining his recently purchased parrot is dead, with MSNBC taking the Michael Palin role by insisting the parrot is not actually dead but is "just resting".

After the two-week cable news disgrace in handling the Terry Schiavo case, anything seems possible.

John Cleese actually performed that skit in reference to Graham Chapman at his funeral. A lot of people were upset by it, but John knew that Graham would've definitely dug it.

    <-- Huge Python freak.

PS... I've never mentioned it before, but the emos here suck.

If anyone has ever seen the Peter Cook/Dudley Moore videos, or heard the recordings of "Derek and Clive", they'll be aware of a sketch about the dead pope lying in state.

I can't help but think of it whenever it is mentioned in the news. A wry smile comes to my face.

I don't know how recognised Peter Cook is in America, but you wouldn't have they Python stuff without him or Spike Milligan. They're both worth investigating.

Peter Cook was our last true anarchist, I think. Sad to lose him. I urge people to look out for his stuff.

Great replacement for John Paul II, an ex-Hitler Youth.
