GRUNDY - Terry Lee Maxwell, 44, faces six counts of taking indecent liberties with a child with whom he had a supervisory relationship. Five counts allege sexual abuse and one a proposition of sex.

"Knowing Terry personally, I was very shocked," said Steve Hamro III, chairman of the Buchanan County School Board.

The indictments, handed down by a county grand jury this week, do not specify the age or sex of the child or indicate whether more than one child was involved.

The indictments cover periods of time between Dec. 1, 1991, and June 15, 1997.

Maxwell resigned as coach in March after a playoff loss. The longtime faculty member remains employed as a driver's education teacher and bus driver.

Maxwell taught at Whitewood High School beginning in the mid-1980s before it and Garden High School combined to form Twin Valley in 2001.

The county School Board had taken no action against Maxwell but could discuss the matter at its meeting Thursday, Hamro said.

Maxwell likely will be suspended, Hamro said.

"That shouldn't be construed as anyone predetermining or judging Mr. Maxwell's innocence or guilt," he said. "The Terry Maxwell I know is a good man and husband and a loving father to his two daughters. He loves his job and is very proficient and effective."

Maxwell played basketball for Whitewood in the late 1970s and was one of the team's top scorers.

His daughter, Brittany, played basketball at Twin Valley and graduated this year, earning an athletics scholarship to the University of Virginia's College at Wise.

Buchanan County is just like the rest of Southwest Virginia, our entire region is heading downhill quickly. However, most of it's from drugs.

I believe I would withold judgement on this, I know this guy and there has been no trial as of yet, but I guess this forum is like the rest of the world.......too quick to pass judgement on someone. Just look at the dates that this was supposed to have taken place.

I'm suprised it took this long to get out, there was rumours of possible accusations a couple of months ago.

but of course that story will never be told in any newspaper

I'm not saying I think he's guilty I'm just saying the story has been going around Twin Valley for months now.
