Son we won before you came here, we'll win while you are here, and we'll win after you are gone.
Mack during a conversation with a parent
Parent: my kid is here for the experience of being on a high school team.
Mack:F*** the experience im here to win and nothin else
Son we won before you came here, we'll win while you are here, and we'll win after you are gone.
I seem to remember Mack having a helicopter fly in and hover to dry off the field before a game. Did this happen, or have I been dreaming this for the past 20+ years?
It's happened on more than one occasion.
Glad to hear that. I've been telling the R-H contingent that story for years. I believe I was in the 8th grade when it happened before a PV/JJK game. With that and watching Doug Bates pitch, it was quite a game.
At the regional tourny in 97 at RC:
"Don't kick that mound son! Thats a beautiful mound. That mound didn't cause you to throw a pitch that bad."
"Call me crazy, but I want to buy the Dallas Cowboys end zone and have the star right at the foot of my bed. That way when I score, I can spike the ball right on the star!" -Woody Paige, Around the Horn 10.9.08
Yeah it happened a few times.
He and Phil are probably the only two coaches, i can honestly say. Have said more and gotten away with it, well than most others could have. It's the game of politics when you have tenure and a winning program.
Mack's only disappointment. He got po'ed when he was told he couldn't retire and still coach. So he got po'ed and left, to where he could.
Both Mack and Phil are good coaches. As far as knowing their sport.
But both lack the personal side of what some consider to be great coaches.
Both are HOF coaches.
But and i hate to say it. As many former players don't like them as those that do.
No, both are great coaches, period.
I always enjoyed seeing Shupe in action. That look out of the corner of his eye. His signs to Ryan Adkins were the best, "Ryan, just hit it"
Ryan Adkins was one of the few players I can ever remember being able to kid around or say what he wanted to Mack and he'd just take it.
I remember once in class Mack was talking about the education system and about how classes were required. Rather than make up an example, he specifically pinpointed a kid in the room saying:
"Look at that boy in the back for example. He doesn't want to be in my class. He could care less about Government. He's failing as it is. He should be out there working on cars or doing something else with his life rather than wasting time in my class"
