Early Monday morning Jacksonville Jaguars safety Gerald Sensabaugh, a Kingsport native, was stopped by police for speeding and arrested for carrying a firearm without a permit.
According to Kingsport police, at 12:06 a.m. an officer saw a 2006 BMW speeding on East Stone Drive, near the intersection of John B. Dennis Highway. Police say radar caught Sensabaugh's vehicle travelling 84 mph in the 55 mph zone.
Sensabaugh, 23, was stopped without incident. When asked, Sensabaugh advised the officer a firearm was in the vehicle, but he had not obtained a carry permit for the weapon -- a misdemeanor offence. The officer recovered a loaded Springfield 9 mm pistol from the car's console, along with another full magazine clip.
Sensabaugh was booked into Kingsport City Jail, posted a $750 bond and was released at 2:30 a.m.
A Dobyns-Bennett High School alum, Sensabaugh played collegiate football at East Tennessee State University before transferring to the University of North Carolina. Originally projected as a first-day pick, Sensabaugh was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the fifth round of the 2005 NFL Draft.
Since then his play, and injuries to the Jags' defensive backfield, have earned a promotion from special teams to a starting strong safety role. In two professional seasons Sensabaugh has notched 56 solo tackles, 12 assists, two interceptions, two fumble recoveries, a forced fumble and blocked punt. He is expected to compete for the starting job again this season.
Sensabaugh, who lives in Kingsport during the off-season, did not returns calls for comment.
