Did anyone see DB hang 100 on David Crockett?

JONESBOROUGH -- With strains of the theme from the Fess Parker movie "Davy Crockett"? being played by the David Crockett band, the state's sixth-anked Dobyns-Bennett Indians remained undefeated in the Big 9 Conference with a 103-75 victory over the Pioneers.

All 12 Indians who dressed for the game scored. Two Indians finished in double figures with Jordan Edwards scoring a career-high 30 points and Darren Riggs 18.

The Indians, against the zone defense of the Pioneers, started the game with a 3-pointer by Todd Halvorsen and then set out to push the game up-tempo, but the Pioneers were up to the speed of the Indians early on, as with 1:52 remaining in the first quarter Crockett's Steven Bennett hit his second 3-pointer of the period and the Indians only led 15-13. The Indians scored the final 11 points of the first quarter to expand their advantage to 26-13.

Crockett was attempting to trap off the first pass by the Indians and that was creating passing lanes to get the ball inside to the D-B big men, the "Big Four"? as Coach Morgan has called them (Marshall Hardy, Darren Riggs, Bronson Flack) the Indians were successful finding the seams in the Pioneer zone and threw the extra pass creating layup opportunities with Jordan Edwards cashing in for a solid 20 points at halftime as D-B roared to a 53-30 halftime advantage.

In the third quarter the two teams matched buckets in the up and down the floor affair with the Pioneers outscoring the Indians 23-22 in the period. David Crockett got as close as 68-50 with 1:20 left in the third, but D-B would get a three point basket from Dustin McConnell and another layup by Edwards to end the period on top 75-53.

The fourth quarter was a somewhat sloppy, but still yet exciting display of offensive basketball as both teams looked for ways to put points on the board. With 44.7 seconds remaining D-B went over the century mark on a layup off a steal by Darius Davis. The Tribe closed out the scoring as Indian senior Jerry Long scored his first varsity points on a 15 foot jumper at the buzzer.

Coach Charlie Morgan said "I am happy with the win, but disappointed in how we played. Tonight we won because we had more firepower than Crockett. I told the guys real players show up to play; participants just show up. Tonight too many of our guys just showed up. We can correct the mistakes we made tonight; we'll take care of it.

A good way to put it would be we played hard, but didn't play smart. We didn't play Indian basketball. Credit Crockett, they made shots, they battled, got layups, and they stayed after it."?

"Jordan Edwards was strong inside. I was pleased with what he and Darren (Riggs) got points wise for us inside. We got the ball inside pretty effectively in the first half, but in the second half we started throwing hope passes; you hope it gets where you're throwing it. We just didn't get the leadership out there I want to see. We don't give up 75 points. We just didn't step up and tomorrow will be practice number 45, we have covered this stuff. I am happy with the victory, not in how we played."?

The Lady Indians had struggled to eek out a 45-41 win over the Lady Pioneers in the first meeting between the two teams back in December in the Buck Van Huss Dome, but on this night scored a convincing 75-45 conference victory. The Lady Indians got out to a great start dominating the boards, playing fast break basketball and took a 15-3 lead with 58 seconds remaining in the first quarter. D-B led after one 17-7.

In the second quarter the Lady Pioneers decided to run, too and fought back to take the lead 23-21 with 3:12 left in the first half on two made free throws by Jordan Taylor. The Lady Indians went to the high low game and got four points from Julie Osborne and a conventional three point play from Megan Devine and established a 30-25 halftime advantage.

In the third quarter with D-B on top 36-29 play was stopped as the Lady Indians' junior guard Holly France had to carried off the floor, as she had passed out.

The Tribe led 48-40 at the end of three.

The final stanza was all D-B as the Lady Indians scored the first 16 points of the period, that run capped off on a great steal and left handed layup by Tori Head to expand the lead to 64-40 with 3:27 showing on the game clock. The Lady Indians outscored the Lady Pioneers 27-5 in the fourth quarter to win 75-45.

D-B got a solid inside game from Devine, Osborne, and Blaine Frohlich, as they all scored double figures. The guard play from Head (who also hit double figures) and Olivia Blair was very effective defensively and with their passes setting up the players in the post.

D-B travels to Sullivan Central for Friday night's conference tilt.
