HONAKER "? There have been a lot of changes in Region D this year, but a couple of traditional powerhouses will be advancing to the state baseball quarterfinals.
Defending Region D champion J.J. Kelly defeated John Battle 13-5 in the semifinal opener.
Kelly, the defending regional champs, will play Honaker in today's regional tournament title game.
"We just kind of run into a buzz saw,"? John Battle coach Larry Cannon said. "We came out and jumped on them early but we knew we would have to hold them. Kelly is a really good team and we couldn't hold them down. If you make an error they capitalize on it. I just have to compliment them, they did the job today."?
Kelly (21-3) overcame a three-run first inning by John Battle (17-6).
Taryn Hayden's RBI single and Austin Sorah's two-run triple highlighted the inning against Kelly pitcher Cody Bentley.
"I just knew I had to go out there and throw strikes,"? Bentley said. "I have a good defense behind me that makes the plays. I had some struggles in the first inning all season but I was able to get back to form in the second."?
J.J. Kelly answered quickly in the bottom of the first as Bentley blasted a two-run home run that plated Aaron Gardner.
"The homer helped a lot,"? Bentley said. "It made me feel more confident when I went back to the mound. I knew my teammates would pick me up with the bats."?
After the first inning, the Trojans didn't score again until the seventh.
J.J. Kelly broke the game wide open in the third and fourth innings. Justin Wilson drove in the go-ahead run in the third inning, while Devan Sproles added a two-run single.
Sproles also homered in the fourth inning and finished 3-for-4 with five RBIs.
Before the third inning was over, six runs had scored as Kelly took an 8-3 lead. The Indians put the game away with five runs in the fourth. The big blast was a three-run home run by Sproles.
