This is getting juicy. A boxing promoter finally listened to its fans and recognized that the UFC is more than legit competition. Golden Boy announced earlier this week that the Sept. 19 undercard for the Floyd Mayweather-Juan Manuel Marquez fight would feature three solid fights, making it worth plunking down $45-$50. Just like it is with the five-to-six solid fights viewers generally get when they purchase a UFC pay-per-view. The full card usually includes 10 or 11 fights but MMA fans have long complained that they'd like to see the entire card.
Now the UFC has gone one step further according to Carlos Arias from the Orange County Register. In a further effort to crush the Mayweather PPV on September 19, the UFC will use SPIKE to televise the full non-PPV undercard. Viewers will get a free look at this rumored lineup:
Efrain Escudero (11-0) vs. Cole Miller (15-3)
Jim Miller (14-2) vs. Thiago Tavares (14-3)
Dan Lauzon (12-2) vs. Rafaello Oliveira (9-1)
Paul Daley (21-8-2) vs. Brian Foster (10-3)
Drew McFedries (8-5) vs. Tomasz Drwal (16-2-1)
Jason Brilz (17-1) vs. Eliot Marshall (7-1)
Vladimir Matyushenko (22-4) vs. Igor Pokrajac (21-5)
Robert Emerson (9-7) vs. Rafael Dos Anjos (11-4)
An eight-fight card is unheard of, but as of this evening the UFC has all eight listed at UFC.com. Aside from the fights, the broadcast also serves as a three hour PPV pitch on cable television to push the card headlined by Rich Franklin versus Vitor Belfort.
now that is great!
"Vladimir Matyushenko" I was wondering were he had been hiding.
hell yes, the janitor is back, and we FINALLY get to watch the pre-lims
and yeah shields has been on the MTV show
lol at the janitor, hilarious nickname
lil nog and matyushenko have fought before
With a schedule like this, how can you complain as a fight fan? September 19 features the double-dip with UFC 103 battling the Floyd Mayweather pay-per-view. Now November is going to feature two more MMA versus boxing showdowns. On November 14 the UFC is going to give fans a free look at one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world, B.J. Penn.
Penn is going to headline the Manchester, England card defending his UFC lightweight title against Diego Sanchez. That same night boxing rolls out it's pound-for-pound king, Manny Pacquiao against Miguel Cotto. Dana White told Cagewriter there was only one boxer he's feared battling head-to-head and that was Oscar De La Hoya. He mentioned Pacman is the only other guy that he'd would have second thoughts about counterprogramming. Apparently, he doesn't fear Pacquiao that much. The card should air on SPIKE.
Don't forget UFC just added Brock Lesnar versus Shane Carwin on November 21 at UFC 106. That night looks like the likely landing place for the rescheduled Paul Williams-Kelly Pavlik fight.
Jake Shields/Mayhem Miller has been finalized for the Strikeforce interim MW title. Should happen in October or November.
According to a press release from World Extreme Cagefighting, next week's WEC 43 event, scheduled for September 2 in Youngstown, Ohio, has been postponed. Benson Henderson, who was to fight for the interim lightweight belt against Donald Cerrone, suffered an undisclosed injury.
The good side of this postponement is that it gives executives from Versus a chance to work out a deal with DirecTV. The satellite television provider said it will dump Versus at the end of this month. Versus is the television home of World Extreme Cagefighting.
Henderson recently revealed that his vision is vastly improved due to surgery on his eyes, but there is no word as to whether the injury is related to his eyes.
Cerrone, who lost a bizarre fight to current WEC lightweight champ Jamie Varner in January, was chomping at the bit for a chance to fight for the title. He has indicated many times that he wanted a rematch with Varner, but was happy to fight for the interim belt in the meantime.
The fights have been rescheduled for October 10, though a location has not been announced.
