    NFL Call Question

Can someone please explain the reasoning behind an inelgible player down field call that was called in the Vikings vs. Cowboys game this past weekend. Simply does not make sense.

What were the circumstances around it? The rule is any player who isn't an eligible receiver can't be downfield on a pass play. An offense can reduce their number of eligible receivers through alignment cuz only the end players on the LOS and the players behind the LOS are eligible anyways..so if a WR is in the slot but lined up on the LOS, and has a WR outside him on the LOS, the WR in the slot is ineligible...as long as both players are on the line of scrimmage...if either is off the line both are eligible unless there is another player lined up outside of them on the LOS... I know that kinda rambling, but really, thet's a simple rule.
...And if you ain't down with that, I got 2 words for ya....

I'm sorry I forgot to specify the "uniqueness" it was on a punt.:2thumbsup:

A punt is still an offensive formation. You can, and will still be called for a "ineligible receiver down field".

On a punt the only players who can be downfield (more than 5 yards beyond the LOS) are the players on the end of the LOS on each side of the formation and anyone lining up in the backfield....it amounts to the same rule for ineligible man downfield on any other down.
