i did not count the runners up. Im going to say its safe in saying atleast 32 times the LPD has been represented in the state game. The losses i can think of right off my head are PV 1, Appy 2 (might be three), JIB 4, JJKelly 1, Clintwood 3, Pound 1. Im not sure if Coeburn ever played for state or not (i dont think they have but i may be wrong) but every other team has prior to the consolidation. Keep in mind this goes back to 1970 and D1 andD2 werent split until the early 80s. To me its amazing how much good football we have had in this little dot on the map of the state of virginia. Its also what has made it so hard to deal with loosing seasons and fallen programs. The LPD as a whole has a higher bar for their football programs weather we realize it or not. Nobody down here likes to loose and nobody down here will accept consistant loosing.

JIB has more than 4, two more runner-ups in the 90's I think, 98' and when was the other? 91'?

Here's the breakdown by school:
Appalachia - Winner (1971, 1989, 1992, 1994, 1996, 1997), Runner-up (1980, 1993, 2002)
Clintwood - Winner (1974, 1975, 1978, 2011), Runner-up (1973, 2007, 2008)
J. J. Kelly - Winner (1981)
John I. Burton - Winner (1972), Runner-up (1990, 1998, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2009)
Pound - Runner-up (1999)
Powell Valley - Winner (1982, 1985, 1989, 1990, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998), Runner-up (2004)
Gate City - Winner (2003)

The VHSL began the 3 class system in 1970, and started the 2 divisions per class system in 1986. So there have been 68 Group A championship games since 1970. Of those 68, an LPD team has been in the final game 35 times. Pretty impressive that an LPD team has played for the gold in 50% of all state title games.

Thats an awesome breakdown! Thanks for doin this. I didnt look online, i just went on the winnings i could count in my head. I find it totally amazing that down here in SWVA is one of the top power districts of the state

Not a problem. I always go to the record book on the VHSL website. It's pretty helpful...but it's not always 100% accurate, which is a shame. It's pretty reliable though.

You also need to edit the list for PV they did not win the state championship in 1988, Lexington won the Div. 2 championship that year. PV won in 1985.
