A Morrison woman was charged with child abuse and neglect after doctors found methamphetamine in her sick child's system.

Helen D. Bonner, 38, took her 21-month-old son to a hospital emergency room after his baby sitter told her he was acting sick.

"He was reacting to the ingestion of the drug, so it must have gotten into his system almost immediately before this all happened and he was taken to the hospital," Sheriffs Department investigator Jim Hartman said last week.

Bonner submitted to a drug test and also tested positive for meth.

She told authorities she does not know how the child came in contact with the illegal drug.

"Everything children that age get in their hands goes right into their mouths so there could have been some residue or something lying around," Hartman said.
