Re: CONSOLIDATION
Why is this even a topic? Please...if it even happens it will take years. Plus you have these old home town folks not wanting to consolidate or parents of kids who think they are a football star in their tiny school who knows they won't have a chance to even get their cleats dirty if they combine to a large school, they would rather the schools fall to shambles. It's stupid.

I think you hit the nail on the head with this one.

Re: CONSOLIDATION
I have a question for some of y'all...folks keep implying that the education one receives in an new building will be better than the one they receive now. Given there will be the same teachers and text books, explain how or give specific examples how consolidation will positively impact the education of our local kids.

Re: CONSOLIDATION
May not need a band, but band sure got my son a college education, an education that I dare say sports won't get a lot of people's children around here.

This whole thought that Appy/Pv kids or the other kids from other schools hate each other is crazy. </div></div>You hit the nail on the head. Colleges look at your education and how well you did in school. Not the tradition of your football team.
There are some Appy students who will despise the ground you walk on the minute they find out you are from PV but, they're young. I'd say that some of the parents may influence that. People take high school rivalries way too far. That can be potentially dangerous.
Nobody in college or the real world will care how good your football team is or what kind of tradition your school has in athletics.
I can see it now in an Education course "Write a 9 page paper about teaching." "My high school had a great athletic tradition. (then 10 pages about that and hating Powell Valley.)" "Sir, this is about your teaching philosophy. I don't care about your high school athletic program nor do I care about the rival school."
Elp6n posted a similar example a few years ago. </div></div>
There ya go C-Dawg, your boy was the one that said we didn't need sports or band. Not me, I've always watched the kids play.

Re: CONSOLIDATION
same teachers yes but there will b a variety of new electives and other courses offered. With there just being 3 school there is a more possibility of more college classes for students. Face it, the education will be a much better with 3 schools than 6

You could already go to college and take dual enrollment classes while still in high school. Bad arguement.

Dual enrollment is not attainable for everyone. The students have to apply for admission, pay tuition (not all of it but they still must pay - I asked the school board about this), they must buy their textbooks, and they must have their own transportation.
Those classes that some students have the privilege of enjoying dual-enrollment for should be offered to ALL students in the public high school level.
-
Re: CONSOLIDATION
As far as I know, that is why they call it dual enrollment. Call and ask, see for yourself.
-
Re: CONSOLIDATION
It is attainable for all too...I taught it for 4 years and the most I ever saw a kid pay was 15 dollars cuz MECC offered financial aid to the kids in the form of tobacco money and coal severence. You do have to pass a placement test as well. Like I said before, consolidation will do nothing but offer new buildings...that's it. Most schools have the texts..the one's that don't, financial aid pays for most of that cost as well.

You're buying cars for them to get there? Paying their insurance and gas?
Forcing dual enrollment in order to get higher level classes is not fair and equal at all.

It is offered, it is no different than giving grants and cutting them off at an income level. But this isn't much of a point anymore, is it? Do you think high school classes will transfer to college? For years you had to be careful what you took at MECC if you were going somewhere else.

Re: CONSOLIDATION
correct me if im wrong but i thought were they were farther away from campus and due to class times that schools strongly discouraged it because the students would have a rough time getting back to their high school campus for their next class.
anyway if you do not think consolidation would better our conties education then you need to take off your blue shaded glasses.
-
Re: CONSOLIDATION
Dual enrollment doesn't have to be on a college campus...many places teach it at the HS as well.

many - but not all.
it needs to be fair.

Re: CONSOLIDATION
current dual enrollment is 53 dollars for each class taken.

Re: CONSOLIDATION
We run busses for suspended kids to go to Wise. Just run another bus, it would be cheaper than building new schools, and this is about putting kids in college, put them there as soon as possible.

Re: CONSOLIDATION
I know what the price is..and I also know that most kids I taught ended up getting it for free..

You're going to run a bus for how many students to go to how many classes on which days? it's not like a field trip where everyone goes to the same place at the same time.

So what's the problem with building an electronic classroom at each school for DE classes? Heck of alot cheaper than 3 new schools...Plus, you'd just need 1 teacher.

When I looked this up last year the UVA-Wise Handbook said financial aid is NOT offered for dual enrollment.

Should take it through MECC then...classes count the same credit. If a person wants to go to UVA Wise, they shoudl have to pay the college cost...cuz it's available at MECC for less than half than what it costs to go to UVAW.

Re: CONSOLIDATION
the "kids" taking college classes are more than likely the smarter ones from each schools and probally know how to act in public. and i dont find it a problem for juniors and seniors who are probally 17 years or older wondering around a college campus.

Really it pretty much is, you wind up with half days or more. And there only 2 colleges in Wise Co. How many courses were you wanting to offer, that aren't already in the schools?

Re: CONSOLIDATION
All classes offered within the school are by MECC. precal, english 111 and 112, basic Comp. all are MECC based.
why not pay the same and go to uva-wise if possibly?

So a St. Paul student should have to drive to BSG to go to MECC?
This just goes back to equal and fair - the opportunities are not at all equal when it comes to forcing dual enrollment for students that want higher level courses.

Where do you get anything that ties me to working in Appy? My point is I know most schools have the electronic classroom...and it could easily be used for DE...more course offerings is the same sham they used to get block scheduling...course offerings at the schools actually shrunk as DE was offered...same reasoning is being used as a basis for consolidation..and it's the same sham. They have the capability now to teach any class to all the county High Schools...so IMO it is fair.

Re: CONSOLIDATION
MECC costs:
http://www.me.vccs.edu/de/de-savings.htm
While in High School: A Dual Enrollment student who earns 12 college credits (four 3 credit classes) by the time he/she graduates from high school has paid between $99.80 to $199.56, instead of the regular tuition/fees cost of $997.80 This savings will range from $798.24 to $898.00.
It's still far from free! The public school system should be providing these at no cost.
There are many students who live in extremely low income households - how is this fair to them? They can't pay for it and they can't get there.
