Jump Stop

Can someone post the exact rule on this, what exactly constitues a walk and what doesn't? Also if you do a jump stop, which foot is your pivot foot when you land?

    Re: Jump Stop

to constitute a jump stop, you have to land with both feet at the same time, at that point the player can choose which foot to be his/her pivot foot, but once chosen they cannot change their pivot foot

what some dont understand is that when you make a jump stop, you still have a 1/2 step or "jump step" left when making a lay-up or shot

however, if both feet don't land at the same time then the first landing foot becomes the pivot foot and cannot be picked up

    Re: Jump Stop

Thanks, I understand why so many people walk with it now. Lot of judgement involved with the refs on when they land. Most people try to establish a pivot foot regardless of when they come down.

    Re: Jump Stop

Its not a walk if you pick your pivot foot up. It when you put it back down when it becomes a walk.

    Re: Jump Stop

That applies to all walks. It a big misconception that fans have about the walk. They see the pivot foot lifted and the start screaming WALK!. If it was when the pivot foot was lifted.... Then how could you legally do a jump shot, layup, etc......

    Re: Jump Stop

All walks or just those with a shot? I am Sure I have seen walks called when a players tries to take someone "Off the Dribble" as soon as they lift there pivot foot.

So is it on a shot only or any walk?

    Thanks in advance

    Re: Jump Stop

yes but the foot "pick up" that you're talking about would mean that the other foot would have to be in the air as well, but if you are only picking up your pivot foot then that means you have just changed your pivot foot to the other foot which is illegal and a walk

    Re: Jump Stop

actually no. After coming to a stop and establishing a pivot foot. The pivot foot may be lifted but not returned to the floor before the ball is released on a pass or shot. In other words, the player can lift his pivot foot and just stand doing nothing. I can imagine what some coaches and fans would scream when no whistle is blown at this point.

    Re: Jump Stop

Archer is correct on a shot or pass regarding the pivot. A player can legally lift the pivot IF the player passes or shoots the ball. The pivot foot MAY NOT be lifted before the ball is released to start a dribble. (Rule 4.43.3c)
