why is this a rule?!?

this is the nfl rule..don't quite understand it though..

Q: When can the first-string QB reenter the game if the third-string quarterback is inserted before the fourth quarter?

Correct answer: Never. If the third quarterback is inserted before the fourth quarter, a team's first two quarterbacks cannot be used in the game at any position.

Always has been...Guess so teams don't have to prepare for 3-4 different QBs...the wildcat kinda remedies that tho.

I was thinking it changed about 10 or 15 years ago. I remember hearing a reason, bugt don't remember what it was.

Its a roster rule. The third QB is normally not active on the roster, he's not considered part of the active roster that each team has available for a game. If the third QB enters the game, technically you're using an inactive player but its allowed because who in their right mind uses the 3rd QB except due to injury.

I was thinking about this rule, and it hit me that Vick is listed as the Eagles 3rd string QB, behind McNabb and Kolb so wouldn't that make it illegal for Mcnabb to come back in the game after vick plays?

If he comes in to play QB I would think so...but with the Wildcat formation, he may be considered a RB..IDK...
