Years ago I ran Fellini's SATYRICON and somewhere halfway through, I see something weird in the left hand corner of the screen. I couldn't exactly make out what it was, so I looked thru my binoculars and there was a student, evidently high on something, walked out on the stage naked. The film pretty much obscured him enough that lots of people hardly knew what was happening, until, of course, the cops made us stop the show and turn up the house lights Idiots. What a sight. Our stage manager, not much more than a kid himself, as was I, had placed himself between three cops and the naked terrified student who didn't even know where he was. Our stage manager told the cops in no uncertain terms that it was a school matter with a sick student and neither the performing arts center or the university had asked them on campus and we were not pressing charges. Then the full house, almost all 2500 of them were students, began booing the cops who finally declined to press it any further. A stagehand had come on stage with a blanket and covered and took the kid off stage and sobered him up. He's lucky our guys were there to intervene.

So I can tell you from experience, with a picture being projected on a naked person, it really is quite difficult to discern what is actually going on. This, of course is from an observation 200ft and 5 stories up from the stage. I suppose people sitting in the front rows get a better view, but to me, all I could see was what looked like something wrong with the print in the bottom corner of the screen.

Jackson, Miss. — The University of Mississippi Medical Center wanted to build a new parking garage and it wanted to build this new garage east of its dental school. A grove of trees sits there, but trees can be chopped down; their roots bulldozed.

And then, earlier this month, UMMC discovered 1,000 dead bodies in the area — probably patients at the Mississippi State Lunatic Asylum; and all probably dead near a century.

“None have names,” Dr. James Keeton, dean of the medical school, told The Clarion-Ledger.

Reburials would cost about $3 million total, officials told the paper, which the school can't afford.

The news gets worse: "The UMMC ground on which Keeton and Gov. Phil Bryant recently stood to announce construction of the $11 million American Cancer Society Hope Lodge is believed to contain yet more bodies."

The property west of the dental school may also house the bodies of former slaves and victims of tuberculosis and "possibly even Civil War dead."

Officials told the Clarion-Ledger that their building plans would be relocated.

Though never confirmed, it is likely corporate raiders such as Carl Icahn and Henry Kravis read this book and took from it lessons they use to this day. Jimmy Ling discovered and mastered the art of robbing Peter to pay Paul in the world of corporate finance. It is known that Harold Simmons, one of the most private and feared corporate raiders in the 1970's and '80s, built a $4 billion empire based on the lessons he learned from Ling. Though there is no love lost between them, Simmons at one time idolized Ling.
This book offers an glimpse into the world of strategic mergers and acquisitons, and serves a s a lesson in how the credit and equity markets are supposed to work. As in any market, the US financial markets are wrought with inefficiencies and billions of dollars are made every year by exploiting these quirks. Ling just happened to build a multi-billion dollar empire based on the market's predicted volatility. He also lost everything under the same premise. Perhaps his trials and tribulations laid out in this book were his payback for pilfering the pension funds of the companies he acquired. At some point, many of us have felt the financial consequences from the actions of people such as Ling. This story of this Texas Titan reminds of the fact that there is no free ride in life.
It is the American dream for someone to start with nothing and then build an empire that controls thousands of jobs and contributes millions of dollars to the gross domestic product of the USA. The story of Jimmy Ling is just one of the great stories of how one man lived life to the fullest and made the most out of the opportunities afforded him. Good or bad, rise and fall.

A venture capitalist who feels colossal California is too unwieldy to govern is proposing to split it into six separate states, and Secretary of State Debra Bowen has given him the green light to start collecting petition signatures.

Tim Draper filed a ballot initiative in December stating that because of recent social and economic changes California has become ?nearly ungovernable.?

He proposed dividing California into six states. San Diego and Orange County would make up ?South California.? ?West California? would include Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, while Bakersfield, Fresno and Stockton would make up the larger ?Central California.? San Francisco and San Jose would be in the new ?Silicon Valley.? ?North California? would include the Sacramento area, and ?Jefferson? would be home to the Redding and Eureka areas.

?California as it is is ungovernable,? Draper told ABC News today. ?It is more and more difficult for Sacramento to keep up with the social issues from the various regions of California. With six Californias, people will be closer to their state governments, and states can get a refresh?.

Brendan Nyhan, Assistant Professor of Government at Dartmouth College, isn?t sold on the idea. ?Splitting California into six states would raise all sorts of concerns about the partisan balance of the senate. I can?t imagine this would ever go anywhere? said Nyhan.

Nyhan says a plan like this would surface many issues. Things like water policy, agricultural policy, and even the electoral college would all change if this plan were to take action.

The plan aims to settle California?s financial issues after the separation of the states. If things can?t be resolved, each state would receive a portion of the state?s debts based on the newly created state?s population.

If the federal government approves creating six new states, ?all tax collections and spending by the existing State of California would end, with its assets and liabilities divided among the new states,? Secretary of State Debra Bowen said in a statement on Tuesday.

That would leave decisions regarding taxes and public spending of the new states up to its elected leaders.

If California were its own separate country, it would have the eighth-largest economy in the world.

In order to make this plan a reality, Draper needs to start collecting signatures in order to qualify the petition for a ballot. He needs the signatures of 807,615 registered voters in 150 days, making his deadline July 18, 2014.

?We are going to put together a grass roots effort to get signatures,? Draper said. ?It looks very promising since there are already several movements to create new states here?.
