This is interesting
How Stuff Works breaks down the cost of a gallon of gas.
One of the biggest components of the cost is taxes:
"Taxes, including federal and local, account for about 31 percent of the total price of gas in the United States. Federal excise taxes are 18.4 cents per gallon, and state excise taxes average 19.96 cents per gallon. There may also be some additional state sales taxes, as well as local and city taxes."
A much smaller percentage is actual profit.
So it isn't "big oil" getting rich of the cost of gas. It's our politicians (so to speak).

where I live the politicians just took tax off of bottled water and chewing gum, and they made a big deal for everyone to know this. What people don't know is that they rose gas tax another 13 cents to replace the lost revenue.
