HI,

I have a La Baby vinyl & cloth baby doll that is almost 21 years old. Poor thing has really gotten dirty from lying around & being played w/ by the kid's. His body (which is cloth) smells like a basement. I have read many tips for restoring on this site and just wanted to run my plan by you guys first.

I would like to seal him up in a bag w/ baking soda to hopefully remove some of the odor and give his vinyl a good scrubbing with a baking soda paste. Do you think any of this would be detrimental since the doll is getting pretty old? It does have sentimental value, but yet again, the way it is now isn't very attractive.

TIA for any additional tips or advice

I think that the baking soda is a good idea, and I can't see why it would be detrimental. The same with the paste rub. Magic eraser works well to clean up, and I know people have used it on older dolls, too. The paste rub did not seem to make a difference with the odor, so if you think Magic Eraser would be less "damaging" you might try that first.
