Question

I bought a travel doll- kirsten, which will be shipping in April so PM me now for a chance to host her, and I think she maybe a PM. But I can't really tell. She does not have a white body but she does have very soft eye lashs- something my newer one doesn't have. Another intersting thing about the body is the tag. There is NO tag what so ever! And it doesn't at all look like it was ever cut off. I'm positive this is an AG doll with an AG body. But what about the tag? Why doesn't it have a white body? Can someone please help? I know we have some major AG smarties on this web too!! White bodies were only made up until about the time Felicity was introduced, in 1991. Mattel took over in 1998, so the majority of PM dolls don't have white bodies. Most PM dolls didn't have tags, either, so you don't have to worry about her authenticity .

Unfortunately, tags indicate the copyright on a design, so something could be copyrighted very long ago and yet be new. For example, look in a book that was recently printed. It might have an old copyright. A book I just purchased that is brand new has a copyright from the sixties, but you can tell it's recently published. Copyright isn't useful to go by at dating things. It would be nice if AG had a more reliable "dating" system, but they never suspected the dolls would become collectible.

Well said Melissa. A good example is Felicity. she came out in 1991, but her clothes say 1986. That is the copyright not the age of the dress or the doll.

The German made dolls with white bodies from 1987 - 1990 and tan bodies from 1991 - 1993/94 have a mark behind their right ear. You see it called a artist mark on ebay. When the dolls started being made in China in the mid 1990's the artist mark went away and the body tags started showing up. I have read on this site that all body tags are Mattel dolls.

Good luck with your host doll. I am sure she is special and will have fun traveling the country.

Could my doll be a PM and still not have an artists mark? [img]graemlins/heart.gif[/img]

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Wow, this is interesting! What does the mark look like?

I checked all my older dolls that fit in with this time frame, and none have any marks on their heads or behind their ears, other than the copyright stamping on the neck. Mine are all straight from AG over many years, so they're authentic, but have no artist mark.

Do people on eBay mean the (c) stamp that begins under the dolls' left ear? If so, that's a copyright notice, not an indication of artist.

I'm really interested since I hadn't heard of this before. Thanks for your help!

The artist mark is usually close to the ear, often underneath the wig. It is a faint series of scratches that can kind of look like # but with more curve to it. It took me a few tries to find mine on the dolls I have from that time frame- but many are hidden under the wigs.
