The only thing I can say with some certainty is that the dolls with the numbers/letters under the Pleasant Company on the back of the neck were made in China and are Mattel made. The pre-Mattel dolls only have Pleasant Company.
All on my girls seem to have different neck marks... I was wondering if anyone had compiled any information about the different neck marks over time and on different dolls. My Elizabeth and Jess both have "? American Girl, LLC" but the writing looks different. My 23, Cody, has "? Pleasant Company" and under it, "45 C3". Kaya has "? Pleasant Co 2002" and Nellie has "? Pleasant Company" and "5 L03". My brand-new Addy has "? Pleasant Company" and "3H9" but she also has an artist mark behind her left ear and a depressed dot on the right. What do all of these different things mean?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Not true. Premattel/First edition Addys and AGT4s have numbers on the oldest ones. There are probably others too, but I never paid attention.Originally posted by luv*AG:

Good to know.....I have collected over 40 AG's over the years (but never an Addy) and that has been my experience. I often wish that AG would put out some kind of reference list for us!
My Cadence (AG 25) is definitely not preMattel, but she still has Pleasant Company on the back of her neck.
Any authentic American Girl doll should have Pleasant Company on the back of the neck. It's whether there are numbers or letters under that.....
Oops....just noticed in an earlier post that Elizabeth and Jess have American Girl on their necks.
I took pictures of my girls a while back. Most of htem are newer, dating from 2002 to now, but Sam and Felicity are early PMs. All the neck stamps are differant

It really is fascinating seeing how different they all are. Would be great if each actually had a serial number that we could trace the origins. I wonder if AG has any idea how some of us can be fixated on this simple characteristic?
