I know I have the book but I just don't have time to read it now that I am back home and starting work again tomorrow. Is Kit short for anything? I am thinking Katherine but I could be wrong. Does the book ever go into that? I know Kitty was a popular name in that time period here in Australia so maybe Kit was also popular as a name in the US???

Say hello to Margaret Mildred Kittredge. Margeret for her mother, and Mildred for her dad's aunt Millie. "Kit" comes from Kittredge, and from a song her dad sang to her when she was little about "pack up your troubles in an old kit bag."

I have always loved Kit's real name. Mildred was my grandmother's name (no words can describe how much I loved, cherished and idolized that woman), and Margaret was her mother's name (whom she adored). So those are my 2 favorite "old-fashioned" names. I also love Kit as a nickname -- it is adorable and suits her perfectly.

You're welcome. You don't know how excited I was to see a book-related question that I could actually answer off the top of my head! When you get the chance to read Meet Kit, the part about her real name is in there, pretty close to the beginning, I think.
