A moment of silence at 7:55 a.m. marked the exact time when the Japanese bombs began to fall, killing more than 2,000 Americans. Hawaii Air National Guard jets flew overhead in the missing-man formation.

On the eve of the anniversary, a dwindling number of survivors returned to the site of their most haunting memories to honor the 429 dead from the USS Oklahoma, which capsized after being struck by Japanese torpedoes. The Oklahoma suffered the second-highest number of Pearl Harbor casualties behind the USS Arizona, which lost 1,177 crewmen.

In all, about 2,390 were killed in the surprise attack.

I'm a little surprised (and pissed) that absolutely nothing about this was mentioned at school today. No special moment of silence... no word of it at all.

    Red face

not to sort of get in on this post but, it was yesterday, 15 years ago, that for 45 minutes on Dec. 6, 1989 an enraged gunman roamed the corridors of Montreal's ?cole Polytechnique and killed 14 women. Marc Lepine, 25, separated the men from the women and before opening fire on the classroom of female engineering students he screamed, "I hate feminists." Almost immediately, the Montreal Massacre became a galvanizing moment in which mourning turned into outrage about all violence against women.

now both of these honours have at least been recognized...
