I first saw John Carpenter's remake of The Thing about 5-6 years ago. I watched many of the scenes through the spaces between my fingers, particulary the dog kennel part.

I hated the movie and regretted buying the VHS tape. I gave it to one of my friends.

Now, I've discovered a newfound affection for it. I bought the collector's edition DVD last week, and have been watching it at least once every day. It's now not only one of my favorite 80s horror films, but one of the best horror movies I've seen. Very well done. I appreciate it much more now.

I agree. One of my all time favorites. The effects are more convincing than anything you could do with CGI. Over 20 years later it still holds up pretty well. The original is considered a classic but I think the update blows it away.

I've got so many questions that were provoked that I don't even know where to begin.

    Maybe here...

Do you think the alien that the Norwegians found in the ice was the pilot of the spacecraft that crashed in the beginning of the film? Or had it just infected the real species that was flying the ship?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I think that's what you're supposed to assume. After the alien thawed out it started using it's defense weapon: morphing into other living things. It's a really unique idea. The story is based on a short called "Who Goes There" by John Campbell if you ever want to read it. From what I can remember Carpenter stayed pretty close to the original story.

A trivia note: did you notice that the guy who survived with Kurt Russell at the end was Keith David, the voice of Spawn?

I remember being completely unprepared for that movie. Watching Carpenter's.... waiting to see if the "Thing" was going to be cooler than the walking carrot of the original.

Then the scene with the defibulator paddles....

One of the few times when watching a movie that my jaw literally fell open....

    Classic.

Tops my list for scariest of all time. No film has had the nightmare potential for me that this one did. I had to buy it so that I could watch it enough times so that it didn't have the effect anymore. Now I just love it.
