They're definitely hot right now - it's the die cast Cars, from the movie Cars of course. These things - of which there are over two dozen different ones at this point - have been flying off the pegs. I haven't seen a movie tie in toy do this well in years now, and I'm betting that Mattel is mighty happy with the results. But is the demand deserved? I have a review up tonight, with photos of just about all of the current crop.
The guest review is from Warren, and covers the nifty Stealth Beast from the X-men line. You can check out all the reviews at the usual:

Thanks for reading!

ummmmmmmm.................
never got a good look at it 'till now-
I thought the cop car was a bit more
(Broderick Crawford) Highway Patroly......
(1955 Buick Century-my favorite)
now I see it's not.
I do love the two garage playsets, though-
waiting to see if they come down in price a bit.
& yeah, you gotta love an old tow truck

I dunno.... $4 per diecast car isn't so bad when you consider some of the Mattel Nascar vehicles... They're between $7 and $9 up here and they are the same size as regular HotWheels.

Thanks for the Cars review, Michael.
If they were hot wheel sized, and a buck or so each, I'd be all over them, because th emovie was cute, but for $4 a pop, and no tin scale with all my hotwheels, I'll pass, or wait for the inevitable hotwheels special "let's milk this property during it's dvd release" editions.
Looks like POTC is the only really great movie property this summer, with enough toy marketing to make it great collecting fun.
