The first time they shot at him he fell down and dropped it (you can see it skid across the pavement), then he rolled over and made a move like he was reaching for something in his waistband. I don't think it was a huge stretch of logic for them to think he was reaching for another gun. Don't get me wrong, 120 shots is obviously way excessive! But I do think it's too easy to sit back and analyze/criticize how a situation went down after the fact (and not having actually been there) and come to the conclusion that the police shouldn't have shot.
Generally speaking, I don't think the police should necessarily have to wait until they are actively fired upon to shoot at a suspect they believe to be an imminent threat. Again, there is no way that many shots were justified in this situation, but I know that I wouldn't want to be a cop standing there in the position of having to make a split second decision whether or not what some suspect was holding (or reaching for) was a gun.

That is somewhat disheartening. It is/was a relatively well publicized story given the "live shooting" aspect and the debate it got going about the media covering chases live in general.
