whether it was because there were overly boastful pioneers, corn crackers who cracked thier own corn instead of having it milled, ox-whipping yeoman, nut cracking factory workers, (all of which bred an association with being poor, low-class and white) it was also a term used primarily by elite southerners as an epithet
later it became a source of regional/ethnic pride as one state would come to be known as The Cracker State, and was further used with pride following the election of a prominent Georgian to the presidency (4 points if you know which one)
