It's a play on the whole "hard to kill" aspect of his legend. The thinking is that maybe he liked pain. Embraced it. Secretly caused himself harm while performing clandestine experiments away from the eyes of the Czar.

Pappette is pissed!!! That's bullshit!! I still love this series, but that is NOT consistent with Rasputin's story. He was never gouged with meat hooks and strung from the ceiling.
