LiveJournal is a free service (payment is optional) that allows you to create an online journal for the world to read. It's a great forum to get out artwork, poetry, rants, whatever. Most of the people I know who have used it have found it extremely addictive. You can make entries public or private, so only certain people can see. You can also customize it so that it goes with your website (if you have one). The reason why it's nicer than just typing stuff up into a webpage is that you don't have to deal with any HTML. You can update it either online through your browser, or you can download a client onto the computer(s) you normally use. It's really nice and completely customizable.
A livejournal 'community' means that anyone who signs up can post into it, so it's kind of like a discussion forum.
