expanding horizons?

I heard talk a long time ago about there possibly being a movie, cartoon series, syndicated series, or mini series on SIP. what is the news. I would love to see one, if it is done right. Personally, i'd like to see a cartoon series. HBO, not ABC. or maybe, put it on the Oxygen or Lifetime networks. They are always looking for a good show with strong female characters. drop me a bone Terry.

Well this is what I can remember:

At one point there were talks between Terry and HBO about doing an animated SiP series. Talks botched on HBO wanting to changes details to a more adult level. Example: People walking into a kitchen nude instead of in their undies. Since then there have been no future plans for an animated version of SiP.

Life action movie:

There?s a independent movie maker / student (I`m not sure about that being the correct assesment of the man but others can fill that in) who?s did a version of "I dream of you". The latest news was that the project is still in the editing fase because of funding problems.

Terry has mentioned he?s writing a SiP screenplay. Current status unknown.

I?d love to see a animated series. Mainly because that means the style and looks can be preserved better than with life action. Wouldn?t mind a life action version though.

personally every time i read a SIP issue i imagine in my head how it would look like if they were given motion and voices. though i've had some trouble imagining katchoo's horse voice like it has been described.

For an example of what happens when a writer/artist loses creative control, contrast "Ghost World" the graphic novel with "Ghost World" the movie (still playing). The former is a slice of life about two young women and their uptight male friend, and which I think S.i.P. readers would enjoy. The latter is a film of the later Woody Allen type, in which a teenager falls in love with a 40-year-old. Although the film isn't so bad on its own terms, it bears only a slight resemblance to the book and is inferior.
As for H.B.O., what is their problem? Are they greedy, cynical pornographers or are they just very, very stupid?

The movie "Ghost World" isn't bad, but it's not a faithful adaptation. One thing that particularly bothered me is it never shows the graffito "Ghost World" whence came the title. That would be like making a "Strangers in Paradise" movie and never playing that song from "Kismet" (the one later sung by Tony Bennet).
Katchoo as Buttercup? How about Francine as Blossom? And Freddie as Mojo Jojo? I'd love to see a Powerpuff Girls version of S.i.P. (or vice versa)!

I guess a bit of both. Fortunately Terry has always stated that he wants full creative control.

He also mentioned that if he?s going to persue either the comic is going to suffer because of time concerns and that?s not acceptable, because that?s still his main focus. So that?s the reason neither of movieprojects have gone ehead yet.

How the screanplay fits into all this is a bit of a mystery. So we?ll have to wait and see.

trashymachos: are you certain? the movie Ghost World was co-written by David Clowes, original writer of the graphic novel. i was very excited when i heard a movie was going to be made of the book. i saw the movie, dragged my non-comic book reading family with me, and we all loved and enjoyed it immensely. i re-read the book and noticed all the little small things that had been added thats didnt apply to the actual story at all but a refreshing treat for purists like myself.

also, from some interviews of the director [ terry zigoff, something like that ] he was allowed a lot more freedom than most studios would have allowed. that, and having the support of the original writer himself, i think Ghost World is the best comic-to-film to date.

the film itself stands on its own as an amazing piece of celluloid and a complete slap in the face to mainstream movies for daring to make an actually wonderful film.

pity it isnt being played in larger circulation. that just means one more exploding train.

This is going to sound weird, but when ever I read any of Katchoo's word balloons, her voice sounds like buttercup (the tough one) from the powerpuff girls.

Neither. They face the daunting position of attempting to make 'cartoons' palatable to adults. If you added all the anime fans and all the comic book geeks up, you wouldn't have a market of interest to HBO. So, in order to make the 'cartoon' be more obviously for adults, as opposed to kids(who, face it would be bored to tears with SiP) they wanted to make it a bit racier to firmly esconce it in the adult range.
Not saying it's the right thing to do for SiP, if Terry wasn't confortable, fine, it's his baby. HBO is just the messenger in this case-grown-up in this country don't really care to watch 'cartoons' for the most part...
