I am absolutely clueless about doing special effects. I am directing a movie where a guy sells his soul to the Devil. The thing is, I don't how I'll make the guy appear gliding with Satan in hell.

What software do you have at your disposal? What editing program are you using? (I'm assuming you're shooting on video.)

I would try to double-exposure it.
First shooting the hell, maybe a close-up of a real fire, blown to one side with a ventilator, to give the impression of gliding. Should be underexposed by one to two stops.
Then rewinding the film (if Super 8 silent cardrige, only possible with some cameras or an external rewinder) and shooting the actors in front of a black background, f.e. in the night, outside the house, illuminated with a halogen lamp. Correct exposure. A ventilator or natural wind will help to blow the coats in one direction, best the same direction the fire was going to.
The result will be, that the actors appear in front of the blowing fire, with blowing coats, fire appearing slightly in their faces and bodies, too.

my advice would be to just put your talent on a dolly and push 'em, it's pritty smooth and cheap, and you don't need a computer.
