There is some false info on Scoopics in some of the posts above.
The "M" does NOT allow you to shoot 400 foot loads, the MS does, and then, only with an expensive and rare adapter, and a mitchell/CP16 style mag.
The MS has the behind the lens filter (I wish my M had this).
The M and MS have the same lens (12.5-75) which is from what I hear, a much better lens than the standard Scoopic.
I like my Scoopic. Not as much as my CP16, which is quiet (the Scoopic is really loud).
In fact, I love using these two cameras together; I have my CP16 mounted on my dolly/jib, and after a dialog shot, or whatever, I just grab my Scoopic for some handheld or pogocam cutaways, CU's, etc. in MOS.
Really quick way to shoot and get lots of coverage.
As for renting in L.A., off the top of my head, I think John at www.indiefilmsonline.com rents stuff.
But yeah, I'd have to agree; just buy one. (I got mine for $331.00, but the moron listed it on ebay as a video camera, so it was an uncommon deal...)
