That's exactly right..I remember..when I was directing commercials and the ad agencies wanted " the MTV look"..or the "shaky hand held look" this or that look..grain was never the subject..as of late it's a differnt thing..I've seen tv spots that had so much grain you could make a breakfast cereal out of them..I think that the public just see the film for what it is.I have never heard someone(non-filmmaker) watching a movie or video say "boy that scene was very grainy"..now audio is a differnt story..what allways struck me as funny was how if a big time director..shoots a music video or TV spot that's grainy or shaky or underexposed..he is an artist..but if a guy off the street shows his reel and it is grainy or shaky..he's an amateur..
