It's to make your competitors think you're only willing to pay the lesser amount, when in reality, you're going to fly in there with 7 seconds to spare with a really high bid (that you are really willing to pay), then they bid another $5.00 or something, thinking you have continued to bid in $5.00 increments, etc.
But still, whatever technique is used, it's whoever bid the highest amount at close of auction who wins, period.

Well, no one is arguing that, Matt. I think we're talking about strategy vs buying power. Those that want something and have money to spare for an item can just post a huge proxy 'super bid' early on and not worry about it. For those of us with limited funds that see an item and need to test the waters, wait, test the waters, wait, etc; taking it slow and easy is the better way to avoid driving up the bid price early on. Also, the idea of posting incremental bids toward the end SOMTIMES lulls the other person into thinking that you're going to play their game and not do anything drastic. When you appear to stop bidding against them about five minutes before the end of auction, many will think that's all there is to it. Shooting a super high bid in at the last second doesn't mean that's what you'll pay. It simply increases the bid up another increment, ASSUMING that someone else isn't doing the same thing. Again, the method isn't without risks. However, I have yet to see early bidding that didn't drive up the price higher than necessary, so there is merit in waiting, in my opinion. Again, I think we're taling about strategy, more than anything, and there really isn't any "right" or "wrong" in strategy.

Never bid before 10 seconds left, it only does two things 1) will cause someone to outbid you therefore raising the price 2) make others aware that you bid and may bid again. Now why would you tip your hand early if you don't have to?
Always let the high bidder stay on top as long as possible so that he feels comfortable, then you suck the life out of him when you bid at the last second.
Some people hate the way ebay auctions finish with an apocalyptic end all time. They prefer the Yahoo way of auto extending an auction 5 minutes if someone tries to bid at the end. From a bidders viewpoint this is STUPID and if used on ebay would lead to incredibly insane bidding wars. It's great for sellers though.

I think this is the best advice yet. I had no clue I was going to be sniped. I thought that if I was vigilant during the last ten minutes that would have been enough. As it was, I really only had $65.00 to spare though I wouldn't have cried over spending $66.00. Anyway, I think I'll be prepared next time.

Hah! I think this is funny. It seems if WE get the item we want by bidding at the last second, we "won the auction". On the other hand, if someone ELSE does it, we were "sniped"! http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/wink.gif

You crack me up, I posted the same thing about 30 posts back, out of sight, out of mind.

Oh, yeah, I'm supposed to be filming, not posting.

Yes, Alex...between this and your other board (where you seem to be the only one posting) how can you possibly get any filming done?

Oooh..I feel so humbled by the mighty Alex...well, let's look at the facts, shall we and see my "lies" close up.
Guys, take a look at the board Alex "moderates." You can see for yourself at:

You are pathetic. I have never once mentioned my site here.
I have mentioned it to maybe three people.
It's content driven, not poser driven.
Perhaps that's why you can't fathom it.
