I've done a modification to my Elmo GS1200 that is almost invisible yet allows you to obtain the very best magnetic recordings possible off film stripe.
I've drilled two 1.5mm diameter holes that allow me to insert a tiny screwdriver. With this screwdriver I can adjust the fine bias potentiometers that control the recording bias, and in this way I can find the optimum position between increased distortion and good high frequency response, and less distortion but a falling treble.
If you look at the big red record switches just below the VU metres, you'll see the red record lamps. My tiny holes are drilled exactly 10mm outboard of each red lamp, on a horizontal axis that passes through the two lamps.
If you lace the projector with striped film you can do test recordings with the fine bias adjusted to different positions. On replay of the film you'll find the best position.
