    What is art

going to go back, to my prison cell reference from the previous post, a piece of art is a prison cell. It picks you up and places you inside this cell. How you choose to spend that time in that cell is entireley up to you . You can just sit in the middle of the cell and let the walls take you in, you can look for the first chance of escape and leave, or you can spend you time examining every brick, every line of plaster , every floor tile in the room. A good piece of art will let you keep finding things in the nooks and the crannys, or a good piece of art can pull you into this room and then spit you out just as fast. the thing is, all that exists is you and the cell. You are totally free to roam/ponder/examine/leave and enter as you like. You have the control.

In film you don;t have the control, as all the decision on what you see and for how long have been made for you by the director.

I realise I'm not going to change anyone's mind in this debate, but thats my gun and i'm sticking to it... If anything go out and get yourself down to a gallery and enjoy.

I think you are all right. If film is NOT art to you, as Chance seems so vehement about, it isn?t. If it is art to you, it is. It is all in the eye and soul of the beholder.
We could all go to an art gallery (or theatre) check out a sculpture, and all have varying opinions on whether it is art.
I have worked in the art business and have heard this argument many times regarding various artists work. Some people think that their personal OPINION is the universal litmus test on whether something is art or not. I think its pretty presumptuous to hear someone tell you that they find something to be art and for you to tell them they are wrong.
Personally my own opinion is that some films are art and some are not.

How about Mullholland Drive (David Lynch?) I think
that fits your prison cell metaphor perfectly well.

You just reminded me of the guy that won the Turner prize last year - for a completely empty room/space, with a light switch going on and off.

But yeah maybe no-one is going to be convinced one way or the other about this stuff...
