I think you can try these ones (that s all I personnally have in my bookmark anyway!)
Though you can also read "Computer Arts" who provides tutorial each month
And what else..? First read your handguide(hem.. you had a handguide when you hem.. bought your hem..licence for 3DMAX, didn t you?)
And try to search in the handguide the way to do what you want to do (it s a good way for practicing the different tools that having a purpose to reach and have to find the way to do it, instead of following step by step tutorial, except if you have absolutely never ever made any thing of course.)
well if you can wait a lil?bit for a download (I mean more than 10 minutes..) you can download my very first and very latest animation at: http://www.angelfire.com/movies/coldheaven2/index.html
(in french but click the link and then follow xoom s instructions)

Ok, ok.
to do glow on light sabers, just design a kinda cylinder and increase illumination parameter. then do rotoscopy:
convert your original movie in avi file or quick time (well I guess if you want to make special effects, you can capture video film in a computer, right?)
set the avi file as background picture (RENDER>ENVIRONMENT>background)
Thus, for each frame of your animation to come, you got a frame of your video in the background
All you got to do know is to scale and move the light cylinder FRAME by FRAME (or KEY FRAME by KEYFRAME if the movement is regular enough) so as it always hides the original saber your actor held in the view window(don t forget to configurate your view window in order to enable"see background picture in the viewport").
Once it s done, I guess you can render the movie and see that your actor now handles a light saber.
For the Starwars modeling, I think there was one issue of "computer arts" last year who dealt with such stuff (search from januar to june): But anyway you should rather take several pictures and try to do it yourself with 3dMAX modeling tools
And ahem..for your handbook, I guess this address could help you:
