um... what about the cost of film and processing? 100ft = 60 bucks Canadian... which is roughly 5 minutes of usable footage, if you take your time... so really, there is technically no such thing as "no-budget" filmmaking... maybe no-budget videomaking... remember that are totally different mediums... video is much more forgiving then film, and way cheaper! But, hey! I would rather be measuring for focus and taking light readings, then white-balancing a friggin' video camera!
I agree with most of what's been said (except I'm having trouble finding a good venue to shoot in that doesn't charge me to hire...), but on the subject of short films vs feature films, I've done both, and so far the shorter the film, the more exposure it's had! My feature has played in just one festival (to a fairly small crowd), my 20 minute movie has played in five festivals in four different countries, and my 30 second ultra-short played on French TV to an audience of 6 million! But that hasn't put me off, I'm planning another feature soon...
That is right for you,but not everyone agrees. I want to do the big block bustler like Starwars. I feel your kind film just don't get look at by alot of people and you can not make a living.To me making movies is also about have people watch. shorts though, agreed, are indeed a calling card, if nothing else.

I'd rather watch an unknown director's short over their feature anyday.
The short could be exemplary, and I would also get a taste of the director, then decide whether I want to spend 90 min. of my life absorbing what else he/she has to say.
If only I had seen a short by John Woo before I viewed "Mission Impossible II."
Using no-budget doesn't mean to steal other people's hard work. If you have the money to buy a PC you should not need to pirate Premiere. Would you be happy if people pirated your movie for nothing? If you really can't afford the ?500 for Premiere 6 go to http://www.aist.com and grab MovieXone for free (does all you ever need for a low-budget film) and then head to http://www.satoripaint.com and obtain Satori XL 2.29 to edit your images. Furthermore, a lot of computer mags carry older versions of media applications on their cover CDs for a fiver, and a lot of gfx/video hardware comes bundled with a decent editing suite. It doesn't always have to be the latest version of a program.
And money DOES solve problems, believe me. When I spend a fortune on an editing suite and a decent camera the results looked amazing. Also having some professional actors with movie experience in the film for a small fee (around ?100-?250 a day) does make a big difference as they can give you some valuable advice.

MONEY creates as many problems as it solves, and being perfectly honest I have yet to see a problem that MONEY solves, but hard graft doesnt - other than not being able to afford a vital operation.

though one point i would like to throw in is no matter if your doing no budget or low budget or paid. its all down to the individual/individuals behind plus jsut this tiny little called talent & Creativity.
