    Question

    hello there,

I'm shooting a short film on 16mm, one scene involves a shot of a young man driving, at night.

Does anyone know where i can get hold of some 'inkie dinkies' or equilvalent for free or cheap...or perhaps even a good way of obtaining a SUBTLE lighting effect at night in a car, using the green of the dash light as the main motivation?

    Thanks and best wishes
    Joanne Ball

    PS. I have no budget.

Try a flashlight--sorry, I mean torch. I tried to do a car shot at night and I just went for whatever it took to get an exposure--people will tend to over look the obvious when they are watching a movie. Good Luck

If you can find ?25.00 a day, hire a 9" Kino Flo car kit. They work off 12 volts and plug into the cigarette lighter and come in pairs (if you have a passenger) and are so lightweight you can tape them onto the dash with Gaffa tape.

I prefer to mount these to the centre of the steering wheel (Beware - a problem for the ballast cable if you are steering, but a dasboard-mounted light, lights up the back of the steering wheel - such a giveaway!)

You can gel the flourescent tubes any colour you want but I find shooting on tungsten stock using the daylight balanced tubes gelled with 1/2 C.T. Orange and underexposed by 1 1/2 stops looks quiet pleasing. Often you will need to shoot on fast stock of either I.E 320 or 500 (Kodak 7277 & 7279), as the tubes give you just enough light to shoot with.

    Maybe try this:

Go to the store, a hardware store and buy a light that runs off of batterys, look in the camping sections. Then go to a arts/craft store and buy some green (light green) plastic.

Then when your done, just return the light to the store.
