Call me silly, but this sounds like REALLY old news to me. My mates and I were doing this sort of thing on our Amiga A500s. OK, it looked sh** compared to graphics capabilities now, but the only real difference is what game they're videoing...

I gave up on the Movies game after a month. Not because it was bad, but because it was a time sucking monster that would have caused me to fail Uni.

The one film I did make though didn't turn out too bad I thought.

Has anybody played with Lionhead's "The Movies" engine? It would seem to be the first "game" aimed at creating a CGI movie (with exception of Movie Magic Studio from about 1981) so I'm wondering if it's less "hacking" involved than using, say, a Quake or Half Life engine.

"Based on a highly original idea from gaming legend Peter Molyneux OBE" - I mean, this must be great, right?!

    Indeed!

After your stories of the bugridden software you're currently using I started googling around for what else was on the table.

I wonder what the usage rights are for the movies you create in The Movies are?

One of these days I'll get a free and quiet hour and do that recording!!

If you use "The Movies" then Lionhead owns your shit regardless. You can't reverse engineer and of the code or modify the content in any way. So you're stuck making those lame little shorts that kids post on the site.

I tried to get on with Machinima for a while (Quake II then HL then HL2 engines) but I find it as, if not more, time consuming than doing it the normal way. I get frustrated with the lack of control and "robotic" was everything moves. Plus props etc., are a total bitch to manipulate in a game engine.

It's quicker and easier to use ALIAS or MAX or one of the freebies (maybe Blender but I HATE the interface and those slow as shit python scripts).

I think you can get GMAX for free (corrections welcome!) and aside from rendering the HDRI's it takes less time than machinima if you know what you're doing.

They say many overnight success is built on 10 years of hard work.

Just a couple of years to go before this goes mainstream then.

And, I'm sure the $3.85 million funding will help.
