i realize that this will probably sound like a stupid question to many of you, but does the XL1-S have stop-motion/frame-by-frame shooting capability? Also, does it have any sort of in-camera effects?

Yes you can record frame by frame and it does offer some digital effects.

Naff and cheesy things. I don't have a list in front of me (why don't you look it up) but it's things like mosaic, strobe, trail, 'art', sepia, mirror etc etc. They're not worth bothering with - unless you're making a 1980s style pop video.

It probably records a bursts of a few frames rather than just one frame, but I'm not certain.

    ------------------

You never need to use special effects when you shoot with a video camera. Any special effect a camera can do can be reproduced when you edit your footage. The big difference is you can change your mind as to which effect you will use when editing or you can change your mind and not use an effect at all.

If you commit to the special effect when shooting, you cannot undo it later.
